Classical Hatha Yoga: Understanding the Traditional Approach
Forget gym-style yoga. I teach the classical science of Hatha Yoga as imparted by Sadhguru, focusing on precision, internal alignment, and self-practice that lasts a lifetime.
Many people come to yoga to lose weight, but yogis did not spend their lives discovering a weight loss method. The science of asanas is about consciously holding a posture to alter the way you think, feel, and perceive life. Weight correction is just a small side effect of a much deeper process.
Is yoga and spirituality only for old people? You learn to use a tool when you need it most. Why would you wait until the end of your life to learn the mechanics of your own body and mind? I started at 27, and it is the best thing that has ever happened to me.
You should never use props like ropes or blocks to force yourself into a posture. Hatha Yoga is about aligning your energy with the cosmos, not just physical stretching. Using props can cause injury and misses the entire point. The transformation is in the journey to the posture, not the shortcut.
In my classes, we never play music. Hatha Yoga requires your complete involvement: body, mind, and energy. Music is a distraction. To connect with the source of creation within you, your mental focus must be one hundred percent.
There is a persistent myth that women should not do yoga during their menstrual cycles. This is simply not true. As Sadhguru says, if the process that creates life is seen as impure, then all of creation is impure. You can and should continue your practices.
When you practice Hatha Yoga regularly, your body's idea of comfort changes. You will naturally prefer to sit with your spine erect on the floor rather than slouching on a sofa. This is your body returning to its natural state of health and alignment.
A common question is, "How do I find time for yoga?" Sadhguru explains that you don't set aside time for a spiritual process. You can turn every moment of your existence, whether it's work or family, into a process for your inner development.
About The Classical Hatha Yoga Difference
In my workshops, you will not find music or props because Hatha Yoga is not about forcing your body into a pose. We focus on specific postures designed to align your energy, not just stretch your muscles. If you are used to gym-style yoga with ropes or blocks, this approach will feel different. It is about precision, focus, and learning how to practice correctly on your own.
Coming from a background as a Chartered Accountant, I initially treated yoga like a mechanical fix for backaches. I wanted a quick result. But the classical Hatha Yoga practices I teach, like Surya Kriya and Bhuta Shuddhi, are not about quick fixes. They are a science.
Why no props? Many people use ropes or blocks to force a stretch. When you use props, you are stretching your body to a point it is not ready for. This is how injuries happen. My focus is on preparing your body step by step so you can reach postures naturally without shortcuts.
Why no music? Hatha Yoga requires the absolute involvement of your body, mind, and energy. If you play music, your attention is split. To experience the mechanics of your system, you need one hundred percent focus on your own breath and alignment.
Log kehte hain (people say) that you start caring less about the mirror and more about how you feel inside. My workshops are designed to make you independent. You learn the complete 21-step solar practice or elemental purification techniques so you can practice at home in Gurgaon or anywhere else you travel. Whether it is private home instruction in South Delhi or a weekend group workshop, my goal is to give you tools that last a lifetime. You stop looking for a weight loss class and start understanding your own biology.
