The Art of Movement: Kathak, Expression, and Soul
Dance is more than choreography for me. It is how I tell stories, process emotions, and find freedom. Explore my practice, from the quiet moments in the studio to the high-energy performances that define the Rangwang spirit.
A spontaneous dance performance in the stunning halls of The Belgadia Palace in Odisha. This is an example of how I use Kathak and contemporary movements to tell a story that interacts with the architecture and history of a space.
Performing a piece at the entrance of the magnificent Kailasa Temple in Ellora. The intricate carvings and ancient energy of the temple provided a powerful stage for this expressive dance performance.
A still from my performance at the Ellora caves. This pose captures a moment of storytelling through Abhinaya, set against the backdrop of ancient rock-cut architecture.
A glimpse into my personal practice and choreography process in the studio. This is where I explore new movements, refine my technique, and develop the sequences I share in my workshops and retreats.
This was my last class in London before moving to Mumbai, a room full of joy with my dance family. It shows the energy of a group class, where we focus on learning choreography together and sharing the happiness of community dance.
A gentle yoga flow in the garden with my personal yoga teacher, my mom. Movement isn't just about high-energy dance; it's also about finding peace, flexibility, and connection, which are key elements in my retreats.
A quiet moment of stretching and reflection in my personal practice space. Flexibility and body conditioning are fundamental to a sustainable dance practice, allowing for greater freedom and expression in movement.
About The Art of Movement
You’ll notice that my movement practice isn't just about the steps. Whether we are in the studio or performing at a heritage site, I focus heavily on 'Abhinaya' – the storytelling and expression behind the technique. If you join one of my retreats, you’re not just training; you’re building a community, and that often involves as much laughter, cooking, and conversation as it does dance.
Kathak is my foundation, but 'Rangwang' – which is Ladakhi for freedom – is the spirit. In my studio classes and retreats, we combine rigorous Kathak footwork (tatkar) with fluid contemporary expression. My goal is to move you beyond the technical perfectionism that often defines classical training. We break down the barrier between the performer and the human.
If you have been searching for a dance space that feels like 'Ghar wali Diwali' (a home-like celebration), this is it. My retreats, whether in the high-altitude heritage properties of Ladakh or the artsy villas of Mandrem in Goa, are designed to give you space to breathe. You will have 12 hours of guided training, but you will also have time to explore, cook, and connect with other dancers. If you are a beginner, we start with grounding and body awareness. If you have experience, we push into the complexities of site-specific choreography and emotional storytelling. I invite you to join us to find your rhythm and leave with more than just a new dance sequence.
