About The Art of Tailoring: Suits & Tuxedos
My suits are built on a framework of structure and tension. I use half-canvas or full-canvas construction to hold the shape, while introducing industrial hardware like exposed metal zippers to break the formality. It is about balancing the discipline of traditional tailoring with the unpredictability of modern design.
The process of creating a suit begins with an understanding of the individual. I do not believe in standard patterns that ignore the unique architecture of a person. Instead, we start with a conversation to identify the narrative behind the garment, whether it is for a formal gala or a statement-making appearance.
My tailoring process involves multiple stages, ensuring that the final output is precise. We utilize premium fabrics such as Super 120s to 140s Merino wool or structured poly-wool blends, which provide the necessary weight and drape for a sharp silhouette.
The Tailoring Process
- Consultation and Sketching: We define the silhouette, whether it demands a broad-shouldered architectural cut or a slim, tapered fit.
- Internal Construction: We integrate canvas internal structures to support the suit’s longevity and shape.
- Fittings: Every client undergoes 2-3 fittings, including a muslin trial, to ensure the garment moves with you rather than against you.
Modern Elements in Classic Form
I reject the idea that formalwear must be static. By incorporating details like metal zippers on cuffs, contrast piping, or hand-embroidered motifs, I turn the suit into a piece of wearable art. If you are looking for a tuxedo, we focus on material fusion—mixing heavy velvets, satins, or liquid-finish fabrics with clean, sharp tailoring. My studio in Defence Colony, Delhi, is where these concepts move from sketches to the final stitch. Every piece is an exercise in organization—taking the chaotic nature of style and giving it a definitive, powerful structure.
Saggar Mehra
I see menswear as a constant dialogue between the traditional and the modern. I do not just make suits; I deconstruct them and rebuild them until they feel entirely new, using patterns and hardware to tell a story.
