About this collection
For Ghazal and Sufi nights, the percussion needs to be subtle enough to let the lyrics take center stage while adding rhythmic texture. I typically use a Darbuka and Djembe setup instead of just a standard Tabla or Dhol. This combination allows me to provide a wider tonal range—from deep, resonant bass to crisp, delicate accents—that underscores the emotional nuance of a bandish or a Sufi kalaam without crowding the artist's performance.
Performing for intimate, sophisticated gatherings requires a different approach than my high-energy concert sets. Here, the focus shifts from volume to control. My foundation in the Jaipur Gharana of music taught me how to listen to the singer's pauses and breaths. When I share the stage with legends like Talat Aziz ji, my role is to act as a rhythmic shadow, enhancing the mood rather than demanding the spotlight.
My Approach to Soulful Sound
Whether it is a corporate gala or a private evening, I prioritize a clean, clear soundscape. I use professional-grade world percussion—mostly the Djembe and Darbuka—because they are incredibly versatile. They can be played with a soft touch to mimic a traditional Tabla or pushed slightly harder to add drama to a crescendo.
Technical Essentials for Your Event
Because these performances are about precision, my technical requirements are specific:
- Instrument Miking: I require 3 to 4 dedicated instrument microphones for the Djembe and Darbuka to capture those subtle overtones.
- Monitor Mixes: A dedicated monitor mix for the percussionist is essential to ensure I am hearing the nuances of the singer’s voice and the band's melody clearly.
- Sound Check: A mandatory 30-minute sound check is non-negotiable. It allows us to balance the percussion with the acoustic instruments or synthesizers, ensuring the audience hears a cohesive performance.
I bring this same level of detail to every show, ensuring that whether you are hosting a hundred guests or just ten, the rhythm is always right.
