About Oil Painting & Palette Knife
Oil painting is as much about patience as it is about skill because of the longer drying time, which actually works in your favor for blending colors. If you choose to work with a palette knife, expect to use less paint than you might think but achieve much more texture. It is a tactile, slightly messy process, so please come prepared to get some paint on your hands and enjoy the flow.
Understanding the Medium
Oil painting remains a favorite for its depth, richness, and the forgiving nature of its slow drying time. This allows you to work, rework, and blend colors until you achieve the exact hue or transition you want. Unlike acrylics that dry fast, oils reward those who want to take their time and build complexity.
The Palette Knife Technique
When you use a palette knife instead of a traditional brush, you are not just painting; you are sculpting on the canvas. This creates physical texture, giving your work a 3D quality that catches the light and adds energy to scenes like cityscapes or vibrant floral arrangements. It is an excellent way to move away from overthinking details and focus on the overall gesture and movement of the piece.
What to Expect in Class
Whether you are joining us in our Chandapura studio or logging in from another city, our approach is always non-judgmental. We guide you through the process, but the canvas is yours.
- Small Groups: We keep batches small (4 to 6 people) so you get proper feedback on your brushwork or knife strokes.
- Materials: For our oil and palette knife courses, we provide the guidance and the space, but students are required to procure their own materials (we provide a specific supply list beforehand).
- Pacing: We do not rush you. Whether it takes three sessions or six, we want you to leave with a finished piece you are proud to display.
If you are an absolute beginner, we recommend starting with a smaller canvas to get a feel for the medium before moving to larger, more complex compositions.
