About Awards, Press & My Musical Journey
Every award and article listed here is more than just a trophy. It represents a moment of validation for the 'Singing Veena' style I have spent years developing, where I attempt to make the instrument echo the human voice. Whether performing at a historic sabha or sharing the stage with fellow artists, these experiences fuel my commitment to the art. If you are looking to host a traditional Carnatic concert or an intimate chamber performance, I would love to discuss how we can bring this music to your event.
My journey is not defined by accolades, but these moments are checkpoints in a long process of learning. Being honored with the 'Sub Senior Best Veena Artist' award at the Madras Music Academy or receiving the 'Kalki Krishnamurthy Memorial Award' alongside my dear friend Vijay Natesan are humbling experiences that keep me grounded in the tradition I love.
I am grateful to institutions like Sri Shanmukhananda Sabha in Mumbai for providing platforms where the music can truly breathe. It is also special to see thoughtful documentation of my work, such as the feature by Malini Nair on Scroll.in. These articles and mentions validate the effort to make the veena accessible to a wider audience, moving it beyond just a sombre instrument.
Most importantly, this section pays tribute to those who taught me. Remembering my guru, Neela Mami, reminds me that no matter the stage or the award, I am always a student. Her fiery energy and dedication to music remain my greatest inspiration. If you are interested in the technical aspects of my playing, the math (kanakku) behind the melody, or simply want to host a performance that combines tradition with personal expression, reach out. We can discuss your requirements for a concert or a lecture-demonstration.
Ramana Balachandhran
I am Ramana, and I believe the veena should sing. My work is a continuous effort to make the instrument echo the human voice, blending Carnatic math with melody so it feels natural rather than calculated. Music to me is a living, breathing dialogue that I am always trying to refine.
