Memorial Portraits and Recreating Cherished Memories

I help keep the essence of your loved ones alive. From faded black-and-white photos to dignified oil paintings, I work with deep care to turn memories into a timeless, tangible tribute.

This is the magic of memorial art. On the left is the old, black-and-white photo provided by the client. On the right is the final painting, where I transformed his grandfather, a soldier from the British era, into a full-color, dignified portrait.

A tribute to my beloved mother, who is now in heaven but forever in my heart. This painting is my soul's expression of gratitude, an eternal connection to the divine presence I call Maa.

With the portrait I painted of my mother. Her blessings and her memory are the driving force behind my art and my life. This painting is my way of keeping her close to me always.

A grand Tanjore memorial portrait, created to honor a couple's legacy. This traditional art form uses gold foil and intricate details to create a divine and lasting tribute.

About this collection

For these portraits, I often work from old, damaged, or separate photographs. My process involves digitally restoring the subjects and combining them into a single, cohesive composition before I begin the actual painting. Whether it is adding a specific uniform or recreating a background, I spend time understanding the person's character to capture not just their likeness, but their bhav—the emotion they carried in life.

How I Recreate Memories

Creating a memorial portrait is more than just painting; it is an act of preservation. When families come to me with a faded, small, or cracked photograph, the first step is often digital restoration. I work to clarify the features and repair the wear of time so that the final canvas reflects the person as you remember them.

The Artistic Process

  • Composition: If you have separate photos of family members and wish to see them together, I can merge them into a unified scene. I can also replace original backgrounds with something more serene, such as a garden or a library, to enhance the dignity of the piece.
  • Medium Choices: For memorial work, I recommend:
    • Oil on Linen: Best for longevity. These pieces use Winsor & Newton oils and are built in layers, ensuring they become true family heirlooms.
    • Tanjore with Gold Foil: An excellent choice for a traditional, divine tribute. This method adds a rich, permanent texture that catches light beautifully.
    • Mixed Media Sketches: A more intimate, detailed option for those who prefer the raw expression of pencil and charcoal or colored pencils.

Why Quality Matters

Because these paintings are intended to last for generations, I use archival-grade materials. Every canvas is double-primed, and every frame is selected for durability. I believe that when you are honouring a life, there should be no shortcuts. My focus remains on the details—the glint in the eye, the expression of a smile—that make the subject feel present again. If you have an old photograph that you wish to transform, please reach out to share the original image so we can discuss the best approach to honouring your loved one.
