Working with delicate silk sarees requires careful handling to ensure they last. We apply specialized stabilizers to every piece to prevent fraying while maintaining the natural drape of the silk. This process transforms your vintage collection into a functional, durable quilt that honours the history of the original fabric.
Your sarees hold more than just color and pattern; they hold memories. At Tsala Studio, we treat every inch of silk with the respect it deserves, ensuring that these heirlooms transition from the wardrobe to the living room without losing their essence.
Our Process
- Stabilization: Silk can be unpredictable. We apply light, high-quality stabilizers to every block. This prevents the fabric from stretching out of shape and keeps the borders aligned, giving the quilt structural integrity.
- Fussy Cutting: We focus on the details that matter to you. Whether it is a specific floral motif, a gold-threaded border, or a recurring peacock pattern, we carefully cut the fabric to center these elements within each quilt block.
- Reversible Design: Many of our clients prefer dual-purpose quilts. We design our saree memory quilts to be reversible, allowing you to switch between the vibrant patterns of the saree and a complementary solid-colored backing, giving you two distinct looks in one.
Preparing Your Sarees
We generally recommend providing 3 to 5 sarees to ensure we have enough fabric to work with for a standard queen-size layout. Don't worry if some pieces are slightly worn; our stabilization technique works wonders on older fabrics. We finish everything using our Bernina Q24 longarm machine, which provides the even tension and intricate stitch patterns required for silk, creating a professional result that stands the test of time.
