Exploring the depth of Bharatanatyam through solo recitals, nuanced storytelling, and the male protagonist's perspective.

A moment from my solo thematic presentation 'Sharanagathi' at the Articulate Festival. Solo work allows for a deep, personal exploration of a theme.

The announcement for my solo performance 'Sharanagathi' as part of the 'Ekaharya' series. It is an honor to be invited to perform at such respected festivals.

The poster for the Articulate Festival, featuring three solo thematic presentations. My piece, 'Sharanagathi', explored the concept of surrender.

An excerpt from my performance of 'Sadhinchene', a Pancharatna Kriti by Saint Thyagaraja. This piece requires both technical virtuosity and deep emotional understanding.

A powerful stance from my solo performance 'Sharanagathi'. The physicality of the dance is used to express the inner state of the character.

नमस्कार. An invitation to the Smaran Dance Festival in San Jose, where I presented 'Sakha', a piece that explores the various emotions of the Nayaka, or hero.

About this collection

My solo work is built on the dialogue between the dancer and the musicians. When I perform pieces like Sakha or Sharanagathi, I always insist on a live orchestra because the interplay of rhythm and expression relies on that spontaneous, in-the-moment connection. If you are looking to book a performance or organize a thematic recital, we should start by discussing the musical accompaniment, as that partnership is what truly breathes life into the composition.

The Art of the Solo Recital

Performing solo is not merely about execution; it is about sustaining the energy of the stage entirely on one's own. My approach to solo artistry focuses on the Nayaka (hero) perspective. While much of the traditional repertoire focuses on the heroine, I enjoy exploring male emotions, psychology, and narratives. Whether I am performing a traditional Varnam or a thematic piece like Sakha, I aim to bring a fresh perspective that respects our lineage while engaging modern audiences.

Bringing Mythology and Philosophy to Life

My choreography is deeply influenced by the poetry of Kalidasa and the emotional depth of Thyagaraja’s compositions. I don't just present steps; I aim to build a narrative arc. For festivals and venues in Bengaluru and beyond, I create shows that go beyond simple entertainment. We explore complex themes—from the philosophy of surrender (Sharanagathi) to environmental consciousness—using the vocabulary of Bharatanatyam.

Why Live Music Matters

I firmly believe that the rapport between the dancer and the musicians (vocalist, mridangam, flute, violin) is the heartbeat of a good performance. My solo recitals are designed to be immersive experiences where the musicians are active participants in the storytelling, not just background accompaniment. This is why I prioritize working with ensembles who understand the nuances of Abhinaya (expression) as well as Nritta (pure dance).

If you are an organizer or a rasika looking to host a thematic performance, let’s discuss your vision. We can adapt the repertoire to suit the venue, whether it is an intimate gathering or a larger festival stage.
