Bharatanatyam Solo Choreography and Abhinaya Coaching

Bharatanatyam is storytelling at its core. I craft solo performances that blend technical precision with the deep, nuanced expression of abhinaya to help you find your unique voice on stage.

This is a Devaranama where I portray Yashoda telling stories to a young Krishna. Even when a theme feels familiar, I find new ways to connect with the character, using abhinaya to convey a mother's love and playfulness.

A snippet from a Javali, a piece that explores the more romantic and playful aspects of love. This choreography, originally by the legendary Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan, is a joy to interpret and perform.

This Telugu Javali tells the story of a nayika whose heart is stolen. My choreography for such pieces focuses on subtle glances, gestures, and expressions that convey the entire emotional arc of the character.

A close-up from a solo recital, capturing a moment of quiet reflection. For me, a successful solo performance is one where I can fully embody the character and share their inner world with the audience.

About this collection

My process is not just about learning steps; it is about decoding the narrative. Before we start choreography, we spend time scripting the story, researching the literature, and understanding the character’s emotional arc. Whether it is a traditional Varnam or a new thematic piece, I ensure the movement language feels authentic to your personality and physically comfortable for you.

For me, the true challenge of a solo performance is bridging the gap between technique and true expression. Abhinaya—the art of expression—should never feel forced or superficial; it must come from an honest understanding of the character you are portraying.

My Approach to Solo Choreography

  • Research-First Creation: Whether we are working on a traditional Javali or a modern thematic concept, I begin with the literature. We explore the poetry, the raga, and the emotional context before setting a single movement.
  • Technical Precision: As a pathologist, I bring an anatomical understanding of the body to my teaching. I focus on posture correction and alignment to ensure your dance is sustainable and injury-free.
  • The Repertoire: I work with you on the full spectrum of the Margam. From the structural complexity of a Varnam to the delicate, nuanced emotions required for a Padam or Javali, I help you layer your performance with maturity and depth.

We will work together through an intensive series of sessions, starting with storyboarding and ending with the final polishing of cues. You will walk away not just with a choreography, but with a deeper connection to the piece itself, ready to share it with your rasikas.
