About The World of Gond Art
You might think Gond art is just about filling in shapes, but it’s actually a rhythmic practice of specific 'dash and dot' patterns. In our studio, we don't just show you how to draw an elephant or the Tree of Life. We teach you the grammar of the lines and the history behind them. Whether you join us for a 2-day weekend immersion or a deep-dive foundation course, our goal is for you to understand why every stroke matters in this ancient tribal tradition.
Understanding the Gond Tradition
Originating from the Gond tribe of Madhya Pradesh, this art form is deeply animistic. Every painting tells a story of nature, mythology, and the interconnectedness of living things. When you study with us, you are not just copying patterns; you are learning to translate your own experiences into this vibrant visual language.
How We Teach
We keep our batches small, usually under 10 people. This ensures you get individual feedback on your symmetry and technique, which is crucial for Gond art.
- For Beginners: Our 2-day Weekend Folk Art Immersion is designed for those who want a quick, hands-on introduction. We provide all materials, including canvas and acrylics, so you can walk away with a finished piece by Sunday evening.
- For Serious Learners: Our foundation and advanced courses move into the technicalities—how to use traditional motifs, how to blend colors that stay true to the earthy palette of tribal art, and how to compose complex narratives on paper.
Why Our Studio in Jayanagar?
We built Pencil & Chai to be an 'adda'—a creative hangout—rather than a sterile classroom. You will find that our space is designed to help you disconnect from the noise of Bangalore and reconnect with the quiet joy of making art. We encourage you to bring your own creative perspective, whether you are a complete novice or someone looking to refine their portfolio.
Pencil and Chai
At Pencil & Chai, we believe that art is a soulful journey, not a race. We opened our doors in 2011 to create a space where you can leave the noise outside, grab a cup of chai, and learn traditional Indian folk arts at your own pace.
