Our first project, featured in designboom, showcases a syncretic cultural tapestry. We blended traditional carved doors and arches with warm minimalism, creating a home that tells a personal story through light and texture.

The entryway of the Jaipur House features a traditionally carved teakwood door. It opens to reveal a carefully composed scene with textile art and curated objects, setting a narrative tone for the entire home.

A detail shot of the entryway, where a console table sits beside the intricately carved door. Each piece feels deliberately chosen, contributing to the home's story of heritage and modernity.

The metallic-finished mandir door, seen through an archway, creates a beautiful play of light and shadow. This custom piece acts as a spiritual and artistic focal point in the home.

An archway frames the view into the dining room, a technique we used throughout the house to create a sense of discovery. This perspective highlights the home's layered and continuous design.

This video pans across the living room of the Jaipur House, showing the blend of a neutral sofa, textured pillows, and sculptural floor lamps. It captures the tranquil yet vibrant symphony of the space.

The living space unfolds with beams of light from vast windows, highlighting the earthy hues and deliberate furnishings. The totem-like floor lamps add a sculptural, modern element.

This bedroom in the Jaipur House is designed as an inviting retreat. A mix of textures, from the upholstered headboard to the patterned cushions, creates a cozy sanctuary that feels uniquely personal.

This video tells the story of the arch in the bedroom. We designed it to elegantly conceal a structural beam, turning a construction challenge into a unique and beautiful architectural feature.

About The Jaipur House: A Cultural Tapestry

We believe site constraints often spark the most innovative design solutions. In this residence, we could not demolish a structural wall shared between plots. Instead of hiding the awkward beam, we crafted a graceful archway that frames the bedroom, turning a construction limitation into the room's most defining architectural feature.

Creating a home in Jaipur required a delicate balance between the city’s rich, vibrant history and a modern, minimalist lifestyle. Our approach centered on the concept of syncretic design, merging the traditional with the contemporary.

The Design Philosophy

We utilized warm minimalism as our foundation. By incorporating red sandstone-inspired tones, teakwood, and natural stone, we anchored the space in its location. The traditional carved teakwood doors at the entryway do not merely serve as transitions; they act as the prologue to a narrative that unfolds room by room.

Crafting Continuity

Throughout the project, we employed the motif of the arch. This served a dual purpose: it created a sense of discovery as one moves through the home, and it allowed us to resolve complex structural challenges. The archway that frames the dining area, for instance, provides a thread of continuity, guiding the eye and softening the transition between distinct living zones.

Material Palette and Curation

Luxury lies in the quiet details. We selected materials that age gracefully, including raw textures, brass sconces, and tactile textiles. The furniture, including the dining set and custom lighting, was selected to encourage conversation and stillness. By integrating locally sourced craftsmanship with global design sensibilities, we created a residence that feels both deeply rooted in the local culture and undeniably contemporary. This project demonstrates our commitment to making spaces that prioritize the emotional resonance of the home, ensuring it feels like a sanctuary, not just a structure.

We are Gautam and Kanika, the founders of NUAR Studios. With this project in Jaipur, we wanted to prove that modern interiors do not have to be cold. They can breathe with the stories of the location while offering the calm of a minimalist sanctuary.
