SAKHI: Dance-Theatre Production of Sita and Draupadi
A powerful dialogue between two iconic women from Hindu mythology, blending Bharatanatyam with contemporary storytelling.
A dynamic scene from "SAKHI," where dancers use vibrant red and yellow fabrics to create a spectacle of color and motion. This represents the fiery energy and emotional turmoil of the characters.
This video is from a creative collaboration with the fashion house OGAAN, inspired by "SAKHI". It was a wonderful experience to translate the themes of our stage production into a fashion campaign.
A short clip of my solo performance as Draupadi from a related production, "FACE to FACE". The intense blue lighting and powerful movements convey her vow of vengeance.
The official poster for the "SAKHI" tour, presented by Madstarbase. This image shows the two protagonists in a moment of quiet conversation, setting the stage for their shared story.
A modern and stylish poster for the "SAKHI" tour, showcasing a contemporary interpretation of the characters' costumes and a list of our performance venues across India.

About SAKHI: A Tale of Two Heroines
Executing this production requires careful coordination, as it involves an ensemble of 3 to 5 dancers and specific theatrical lighting. Before every performance, I personally oversee the technical cues and blocking at the venue to ensure the narrative flow between the two characters remains seamless.
In SAKHI, we move beyond the traditional portrayal of Sita and Draupadi. Instead of seeing them as distant figures from our epics, this performance explores their shared experiences, their resilience, and the unspoken understanding between them. It is not just a dance piece; it is an intimate conversation brought to life through movement.
This collaboration with the Jyotsna Shourie Dance Society and the Keelaka Dance Company blends the discipline of Bharatanatyam with contemporary dance and theatre. Whether we are performing at the India Habitat Centre in Delhi or the Royal Opera House in Mumbai, the focus remains on the storytelling. We use traditional Kanjeevaram styling and evocative props to maintain the authenticity of the classical form while allowing the modern narrative to breathe.
For organizers planning a cultural festival, fundraiser, or brand event, please note that this production runs for 45 to 60 minutes. We provide a full lighting cue sheet and require one tech-run or blocking session at your venue on the day of the event to ensure every transition hits the right mark. If you are interested in bringing this dialogue to your stage, I would be happy to discuss the technical requirements and fit for your specific venue.
Nandita Kalaan
I balance my life between the structure of Bharatanatyam and the creative flow of design. SAKHI is a project very close to my heart, as it allows me to step into these legendary women's shoes and find fresh, human meaning in the stories I grew up with.
