Couture relies on form and narrative. I use specific lighting and composition to document the structural complexity of these pieces for designers and publications.

About Couture & Avant-Garde

Photographing high-end couture requires precision lighting to capture the texture and volume of the garment. When working with pieces like Rahul Mishra’s, my process centers on sculpting the light to highlight the silhouette rather than just recording the fabric, ensuring the imagery matches the architectural ambition of the design.

Focus on Structural Integrity

Avant-garde fashion is often sculptural. When I approach a shoot for couture or conceptual collections, the primary challenge is translating that three-dimensional complexity into a two-dimensional image without losing the artist’s intent. My lighting setups are designed to define edges, emphasize embroidery, and create contrast that separates the subject from the background.

The Collaborative Process

Photography at this level is a team effort. A successful editorial or campaign shoot requires synchronisation between the stylist, makeup artist, and the subject. I facilitate this by creating detailed mood boards before the shoot day to ensure we are aligned on the narrative. My role is to provide the technical framework—lighting, angles, and framing—while allowing the stylists and designers to showcase the garment's unique characteristics.

Technical Approach

  • Lighting Control: I utilise a mix of professional strobes and modifiers to craft dramatic, studio-quality light that reveals intricate textures.
  • Tethered Shooting: For high-stakes campaigns, I shoot tethered to a monitor, allowing designers and art directors to review the composition and detail in real-time.
  • Post-Production: My editing process focuses on clean, high-end skin retouching and precise colour grading to ensure the final assets are ready for print editorials or digital lookbooks.

I split my time between the UK and India. My workflow is optimised for global projects, whether you are an established design house or an emerging label looking to build a distinct visual identity. I am open for international assignments and collaborations.
