Community Bharatanatyam Workshops & Outreach
Dance belongs to everyone. I am deeply grateful for the chance to bring the rhythm and stories of Bharatanatyam to children in rural communities near Bangalore.
A music and dance session for children at Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya, a school that serves 23 villages near Bangalore. It is a privilege to be part of the Ambalam Foundation's initiative to bring classical arts to rural schools.
About Sharing the Art: Community Workshops
Teaching in schools like Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya requires more than just technique; it requires a structured approach that translates classical theory into something accessible for children. In these workshops, I focus on the basics of Talam (rhythm) and physical discipline, ensuring the students get a consistent, repeatable practice rather than just a one-off demonstration.
Bridging Tradition and Community
For me, the practice of Bharatanatyam does not end at the studio door. Through the Ambalam Foundation, I find immense joy in taking this classical art form into spaces where it might not otherwise reach. After a necessary pause during the pandemic, it has been a humbling experience to restart these programs, specifically targeting rural schools that cater to children who otherwise have limited access to formal arts education.
The Curriculum of Our Workshops
These sessions are designed to be practical and grounding. We focus on three core areas:
- Foundational Rhythm: Introducing children to the concept of Talam (rhythm cycles), which helps with focus and cognitive discipline.
- Body Awareness: Using basic Adavus (footwork) to encourage physical fitness and posture, similar to the conditioning I apply in my professional training.
- Storytelling through Abhinaya: Teaching the children how to express emotions and mythology, which serves as a creative outlet and a way to connect with our cultural roots.
Why This Matters
As a pathologist, I see the immediate link between discipline and mental health. I believe that exposing children to the rigor of a classical art form like Bharatanatyam provides them with a toolkit for life—whether it is patience, coordination, or simply the ability to express oneself. The goal is not to turn every child into a professional dancer, but to plant a seed of appreciation for our traditions and give them a structured, creative space to thrive in. If you are interested in organizing a workshop or partnering to bring these sessions to a community or school, let us talk about how we can make that happen.
Ramya Suresh
I'm Dr. Ramya Suresh. My life is a balance between the precision of pathology and the expressive soul of Bharatanatyam. I believe in the power of dance to build discipline and joy, and I love taking my art into schools and community spaces to share those lessons with the next generation.
