Thematic Production Spotlight: 'Sharad - Rising through Fall'
This production, commissioned by Natyarangam, explores autumn as a metaphor for introspection and renewal. It blends classical Bharatanatyam with folk elements like Dhunuchi Naach to create a full-length stage experience.
The journey of "Sharad" began with an idea. This was the initial announcement for the production, a new work commissioned by Natyarangam for their annual thematic dance festival.
Conceptualizing "Sharad" was a surreal process of learning and scripting. I drew inspiration from Kalidasa's poetry and Ragamala paintings to portray the vivid colors and emotions of the autumn season.
Here, I share my personal thoughts on the creative process behind "Sharad". The theme of shedding the old to make way for the new was a journey of discovery for me as an artist.
A production of this scale is a team effort. This video introduces the stellar ensemble of musicians and artists who brought the music, lighting, and narration of "Sharad" to life.
A look at our rehearsals with the live orchestra just days before the premiere. This is where the choreography and music truly come together, filled with nervous excitement and creative energy.
This is the official teaser for "Sharad - Rising through Fall". It captures the dramatic visuals, from the use of smoke to the vibrant costumes, that we used to evoke the essence of autumn on stage.
A moment from the "Sharad" performance, where the stage lighting and smoke effects create a mystical atmosphere. I work closely with lighting designers to enhance the mood of my choreographic works.
About this collection
Before I begin teaching or choreographing, I spend weeks on the research phase. For 'Sharad,' this meant translating the imagery of autumn from poetry and Ragamala paintings into a narrative storyboard, ensuring the verses in Sanskrit and Kannada matched the emotional arc of the piece.
Building a Thematic Production
When I develop a full-length thematic production, my goal is to guide you from a simple concept to a polished stage performance. 'Sharad - Rising through Fall' was my first foray into this, and it taught me that choreography is only one part of the equation.
My Process
- Research & Scripting: We start by sourcing literature—whether it is classical verses or contemporary poetry—to build a strong emotional foundation.
- Music Coordination: I work closely with musicians to select or compose tracks that align with the narrative. In 'Sharad,' we fused Carnatic raga, tanam, and Hindustani tarana to evoke the specific mood of the season.
- Visual & Technical Support: A production is a multi-sensory experience. I provide advice on costume colors, lighting cues, and even stage dimensions to ensure the visual elements support the storytelling.
Why This Matters
Whether you are preparing for an arangetram or a thematic festival, the challenge is always the same: how to make the audience feel the story. My approach combines the technical discipline of Bharatanatyam with the nuance of abhinaya (expression). I focus on anatomical posture corrections—informed by my medical background—to ensure you can perform these demanding pieces safely while still maintaining the grace and energy required on stage.
If you have a concept in mind, I am happy to help you break it down into a script, music plan, and final choreography.
Ramya Suresh
I am a pathologist by day and a Bharatanatyam dancer by heartbeat. My dual life allows me to approach choreography with both scientific precision and the emotional depth of a dancer, ensuring that your vision isn't just performed, but truly lived on stage.
