Bharatanatyam Duet and Group Choreography
Namaskara! I work with dancers and groups to craft choreography that finds the perfect balance between traditional precision and meaningful storytelling.
A perfectly symmetrical pose from a duet performance. In my group choreography, I emphasize precision and geometric patterns to create a powerful visual impact on stage.
This image shows the seamless coordination required in duet work. We work on mirroring movements and maintaining a strong connection to perform as one entity.
A moment of interaction between two dancers in a duet. I choreograph these pieces to be a conversation, where each dancer responds to the other through movement and expression.
This pose from a duet showcases the use of different levels and complementary postures. I design my choreography to be visually dynamic, using the entire stage space.
An energetic moment from a duet performance. My choreography often includes intricate footwork and rhythmic patterns that challenge the dancers and energize the audience.
This image captures the narrative aspect of a duet. Here, two dancers portray different characters or emotions, their poses telling a story of devotion or dialogue.
A dramatic black and white photograph of a duet. The stark contrast highlights the form and lines of the dancers, showcasing the sculptural quality I strive for in my choreography.
About this collection
When choreographing for duets or groups, I focus on the dialogue between dancers rather than just synchronized steps. I look at how bodies can occupy space, using geometry and timing to ensure that every movement feels like a deliberate, shared conversation between the performers on stage.
My approach to duet and group choreography is rooted in the style of my acharya, Smt. Indira Kadambi, with an emphasis on visual symmetry and narrative clarity. Whether you are preparing for an arangetram or a festival performance, my goal is to make the group act as a single entity while allowing individual expression to shine through.
The Choreography Process
- Conceptualization: We begin by defining the theme. We discuss the script, the specific verses or poetry involved, and the emotional arc of the piece.
- Geometric Design: For groups, I plan floor patterns and visual geometry. I pay close attention to how dancers of different heights and reaches can interact to make the stage look balanced.
- Synchronisation Training: I conduct 10 to 12 hours of rehearsal supervision to clean lines and ensure movements are in perfect rhythm. We work on the 'dialogue'—when to mirror each other and when to provide a contrast.
- Technical Polish: Coming from a medical background, I focus on anatomical posture corrections. I ensure the movements are not only aesthetically pleasing but also physically sustainable for the dancers.
Why Work Together?
I treat every project as a creative partnership. I handle the script research, music selection, and lighting cues so you can focus on the performance. If you have an existing concept or need help building one from scratch, we will work through the movements until it feels natural to your style. My role is to help you translate your vision into a stage-ready production.
Ramya Suresh
I am Dr. Ramya Suresh. My dance practice is rooted in the style of my acharya, Smt. Indira Kadambi, and I balance this with my work as a pathologist. I find immense joy in building choreography that helps dancers connect, whether it is for a small duet or a larger ensemble performance.
