Shringara Sharanagati: A Thematic Solo Production
A soul-stirring solo exploration of the gopikas' surrender to Krishna. This production weaves together traditional Bharatanatyam, original lyrics, and emotional storytelling to bring timeless mythology to life.
A teaser for my solo production, 'Shringara Sharanagati'. This project was a journey of months, working with poets and musicians to bring the world of Krishna and the gopikas to life. It showcases my approach to creating a complete thematic experience.
Twenty years of my dance journey led to this moment of complete abandon on stage during 'Shringara Sharanagati'. This performance was a promise to myself to dance with absolute joy, a feeling I strive to embed in every piece I choreograph.
To the original 'chor' or thief, Krishna, who steals our hearts. This is a glimpse from 'Shringara Sharanagati', set to a beautiful philosophical song. It demonstrates how I use traditional Bharatanatyam to explore contemporary ideas of love and detachment.
The sound of Krishna's flute makes the body dance. In this excerpt from 'Shringara Sharanagati', I use a sequence of karanas, or dynamic dance units, to depict the divine effect of Krishna's music on the soul. This is how I blend technicality with storytelling.
A playful moment from 'Shringara Sharanagati' where one gopika fibs to another about getting a doll for her child, while her real intention is to meet Krishna. I love creating these small, humorous exchanges that reveal the very human emotions within divine stories.
This is a personal invitation to my performance of 'Shringara Sharanagati'. It shows a glimpse of the rehearsal process with the live musical ensemble, highlighting the collaborative nature of my work. Creating a new production is a journey I take with my entire team.
A moment of quiet reflection from 'Shringara Sharanagati'. This pose captures the deep love and devotion of the gopikas for Krishna. My choreography focuses on creating these powerful, still moments that speak volumes.
About this collection
Creating a full-length production like 'Shringara Sharanagati' is not just about choreography; it is an act of research and collaboration. I work with literary scholars to select the Sahitya (lyrics) and coordinate with musicians for the live score. Before we step onto the stage, we spend months mapping out the Sthayi Bhava—the dominant emotion of each scene—ensuring that every gesture, from the opening invocation to the final pose, tells a cohesive story that resonates with the audience.
A solo production is a conversation between the dancer and the divine. In 'Shringara Sharanagati', the central theme is the surrender of the gopikas. To translate this complex bhakti (devotion) into dance, the process starts with script consultation. We do not use standard repertoires; we look at texts like the Srimad Bhagavatam and works by poets like Pu.Ti.Na to craft a narrative that feels fresh yet rooted in tradition.
My Process
- Concept & Scripting: We select the Sahitya based on the specific thematic arc. Whether it is a known myth or a rare text, the literary backing forms our foundation.
- Musical Collaboration: I compose the musical score in tandem with vocalists and instrumentalists. We prioritize original compositions that heighten the emotional impact, rather than relying on stock tracks.
- Stage Design & Aesthetics: A production is a visual experience. I consider the lighting cues, costume colors, and stage layout, often incorporating traditional elements like the carved wooden doors shown in my gallery to evoke the setting of Vrindavan.
- Execution: From technical rehearsals to writing program notes for the audience, my role is to manage the production so the performer can focus entirely on the abhinaya (expression).
If you are planning an Arangetram or a solo stage production in Bengaluru or beyond, you need more than just sequences of steps. You need a director who understands the grammar of the Natyashastra but respects the freedom to innovate. Let us build a performance that is technically precise, emotionally authentic, and uniquely yours.
