Asana Practice for Balance and Mindfulness
Yoga is not about the shape of your body, but the shape of your life. Explore foundational poses that help you build strength, find stillness, and connect with your breath.
This is Vrikshasana, the Tree Pose, practiced at sunrise. This asana helps us find balance and stability, rooting down into the earth just like a tree. It reminds us that even with the world moving around us, we can find a steady center.
Here I am in the Himalayas, a place of immense peace. I find that meditating in nature, by the water, helps connect me to the stillness within. In my classes, I guide you to find this same sense of inner quiet, no matter where you are.
In this seated meditation pose, I open my arms with my fingers in Jnana Mudra. This gesture symbolizes wisdom and the connection of the individual self with the universal consciousness. It is a simple way to channel energy and focus during your practice.
Raising the arms during a seated meditation can help to open the heart and lengthen the spine. This movement encourages a feeling of receiving energy from above while staying grounded through your seat. It is a beautiful way to connect the earth and the sky within your own body.
This is a simple setup for a restorative yoga session, with mats and bolsters ready. You don't need a fancy studio to practice. The most important thing is creating a space where you can feel calm, supported, and ready to connect with your mind and body.
About Asana Practice: Connecting with the Body
In these sessions, we prioritize alignment and breath over depth. If you cannot touch your toes, it does not matter. The goal is to move slowly so you can notice where you hold tension, often in the hips or shoulders, and use the pose to release it. My focus is on helping you feel comfortable in your own skin, regardless of your current flexibility.
Many students come to me thinking they need to be flexible to start yoga. This is a common misconception. In my classes, we use foundational asanas, like Vrikshasana (Tree Pose), not to show off, but to practice grounding. Think of your body like the banyan tree: you must grow roots deep into the earth before you can reach toward the sky.
We break down postures into simple, manageable steps. You will learn to coordinate your movement with your breath, which turns a simple stretch into a meditation. We also focus on what is happening internally. Are you clenching your jaw? Are you holding your breath to get deeper into the pose? Learning to let go of that resistance is where the real yoga happens.
These sessions are designed for everyone, from beginners to those wanting to deepen their understanding of mindful movement. Whether you are working from a home setup or a dedicated space, we adapt the poses to your physical reality. By the end of our time together, the goal is not to perform a perfect pose, but to feel a little more at ease within yourself. This is how we move from a restless mind to a restful state.
