Welcoming a New Sibling: Maternity Photos for the Whole Family
Including your older kids in the maternity session makes the wait even more special. I capture those sweet, unfiltered moments as they get ready to take on their new role as big brother or sister.
A truly precious moment between a mother and her daughter. The little girl whispers to the baby bump, creating a memory the family will cherish forever.
A beautiful family portrait celebrating the upcoming arrival. Including the whole family, with the older sibling hugging the baby bump, makes for a perfect memory.
About Welcoming a New Sibling
When we include older siblings, the dynamic changes. I don't force them into rigid poses. Instead, I set aside extra time to let them interact with the bump at their own pace. If they need a break, a snack, or just some time to play in the studio first, we take it. It ensures we get genuine smiles and tender interactions, rather than forced expressions, capturing them as they truly are before the big change happens.
Including the older sibling is one of my favorite parts of a maternity shoot. It turns a standard portrait session into a narrative of your family's growth. My studio in Malyana, Shimla, is equipped with props and setups that are safe and engaging for younger kids, ensuring they do not feel like they are just sitting for a photo.
How we make it work
- The Comfort Factor: Most kids get restless in formal settings. I keep the environment relaxed. If your child wants to sit on the floor, we sit on the floor. If they want to touch the bump or listen to the baby, we make that the centerpiece of the frame.
- Outdoor vs. Studio: For energetic siblings, sometimes an outdoor session at a scenic spot in Shimla works best. It gives them space to move, and we can capture candid shots of the family walking together, which feels less like work for the little ones.
- Preparation: I always suggest bringing their favorite toy or comfort item. It helps them settle in, and often, it makes its way into the photos, adding a layer of authenticity to the memory.
Choosing the right session
If you are planning to include the whole family, I recommend the Signature Indoor & Outdoor Family Experience. It is a longer, half-day session that allows us to manage children's moods without the pressure of a ticking clock. It covers up to three costume changes, so we have plenty of time to get the individual shots, the couple portraits, and the sibling interactions you want.
