Training the Next Generation of Kerala Percussion Artists
We nurture young talent in the sacred traditions of Kerala percussion. Our students learn discipline, rhythm, and the classical Melam style in our Bangalore Gurukulam.

About this collection
You might see our students performing with confidence, but the journey begins on stone blocks. We prioritize Saadhakam, the practice of rhythmic patterns on silent surfaces, to build wrist strength and muscle memory. This is not about rushing to the stage; it is about building the focus required to hold the rhythm steady. Our students spend months here before they touch a Chenda drum, ensuring the foundation is deep before the performance begins.
The Gurukulam Philosophy
Our academy functions as a traditional Gurukulam, where we treat every student as a member of our extended family. The goal is not just to produce performers, but to pass on the cultural heritage of Kerala temple arts. We keep our classes authentic, focusing on the classical techniques that have been preserved for generations.
Building the Foundation
Learning the Chenda or Ilathaalam requires patience. We start all students, regardless of age, with foundational training. You will learn the mechanics of rhythm, the correct posture, and the discipline of the ensemble. Whether you join our weekend batches at locations like Ramamurthy Nagar or Sarjapur Road, or learn via our online platform, the curriculum remains consistent.
Performance Opportunities
We believe that performance is the ultimate form of learning. Our students gain experience through grand stages, including temple festivals at places like the Kollur Mookambika Temple. Seeing our students, some as young as seven, perform with poise is the greatest indicator that the tradition is in safe hands. We provide clear paths for students to progress from basic practice blocks to participating in full-scale Panchari and Pandi Melams.
Join Our Family
We welcome anyone over the age of seven with a passion for traditional percussion. We have dedicated, inclusive batches, including exclusive classes for women and girls, ensuring a safe and encouraging environment for everyone. We do not just teach notes; we teach the emotion behind the sound, the 'simha garjjanam' or lion's roar, that brings a festival ground to life.
Kalavadhyam
We started with a small spark to keep Kerala's percussion traditions alive in Bangalore. Today, we are a family of over 800 students, all learning the discipline of the Melam together. We welcome anyone with passion, from age seven and up, to join our Gurukulam.
