About Pencil & Charcoal Drawing

I believe sketching is the bedrock of every artist. In these sessions, we strip art back to its essentials: light, shadow, and proportion. Whether you are learning to use grids for accurate facial features or mastering the texture of animal fur with charcoal, I guide you through each layer to ensure you see progress in every session.

I keep my studio environment simple and focused. My goal is not to fill up seats, but to help you find your own style through consistent practice.

The Foundation We begin with pencil shading to understand how lines, shapes, and perspective work together. We practice light and shadow control, which is the secret to making a two-dimensional sketch look real. For those working on portraits, I teach the grid method to ensure your proportions are accurate before you even pick up a shading pencil.

Charcoal Techniques Once you have the basics, we transition to charcoal. This medium is unforgiving but rewarding. You will learn to use charcoal sticks and pencils to create deep blacks and soft highlights. We work on techniques for blending to create smooth gradients, which is essential for capturing everything from realistic eyes to the intricate details of temple architecture.

Exam Coaching If you are a student preparing for the Karnataka Secondary Drawing Board exams, I provide focused training on the specific curriculum required for both Lower and Higher grade assessments.

The Studio Experience Classes are kept in small groups of 4 to 6 students. This allows me to give you personal attention, whether you are 8 or 85. I provide the easels and a reference library of still life objects, but you will need to bring your own sketchbook and materials. If you have been hesitant about starting, know that many of my current students walked in with zero experience and are now shading complex portraits.
