About On the Judge's Panel
When I sit on the judge's panel, I am not just watching your footwork. I am listening to the track with a DJ's ear, catching how you handle the texture, the silence, and the heavy breaks in the music. If you are off-beat, I will notice it instantly. I look for dancers who treat the battle like a conversation with the music, not just a set of moves they practiced in a studio.
Judging is not a side gig for me, it is an extension of my life as a dancer and DJ. Because I spend hours digging for tracks, I understand song structure in a way that helps me see deeper into a dancer's musicality. Whether it is a Hip-Hop 1v1 or a complex 'Rep Your Style' category, I am there to assess the connection between the art and the artist.
What I Look For
- Foundation & Originality: Clean technique is the starting point, but I want to see your flavor. Are you copying what you saw on Instagram, or are you bringing your own soul to the floor?
- Musicality: I reward dancers who catch the nuances in the track. If the music drops or changes texture, your body needs to show me that you heard it.
- Battle Psychology: I watch how you handle the pressure. Are you rattled by a call-out, or do you stay grounded? This is why I focus on the mindset aspect in my workshops—it is part of the battle.
My Judging Approach
I keep the process disciplined. From the preliminary cypher selection to the final round, I use a clear, consistent protocol based on technique and flow. For events, I provide 10 to 15 minutes of direct, constructive feedback for the finalists. It is not about winning or losing; it is about helping the scene grow by keeping the standards high.
