Building Foundational Gymnastics Skills for Kids
We focus on the essential movement patterns—jumps, hinges, and pulls—that every child needs. Our approach replaces boring drills with fun, skill-building games, helping your child develop strength, coordination, and confidence from the ground up.
Pogo Jumps are a fantastic floor drill for building explosive power and tendon strength. This dynamic exercise enhances coordination and reactive movement, simulating the spring-like motions essential for powerful gymnastic routines.
We use Wall Squats to build incredible lower body strength and stability. A proper squat is a cornerstone of athletic development, and we guide each child to ensure they learn the correct form for maximum benefit and safety.
To make learning more interactive, we use partner drills like the squat and throw. This adds a layer of hand-eye coordination and teamwork to the fundamental squat pattern, keeping kids engaged while we fine-tune their depth and stance.
The bridge is a key hinge pattern we teach to develop posterior chain strength and flexibility. We introduce this movement through fun, team-based games, ensuring kids master the form while being playfully distracted.
Leaping and landing with control is a fundamental skill for any aspiring athlete. We teach children how to safely absorb impact and maintain balance, which is crucial for preventing injuries and executing advanced movements.
The 'pull' is a fundamental movement for upper body strength, used in everything from tug-of-war to pull-ups. We teach this in various ways to build a robust back, arms, and shoulders, enhancing overall athleticism.

The hip hinge is a powerful movement that activates the entire posterior chain. We train this pattern contextually, using exercises like kettlebell swings, to ensure the strength gained here transfers directly to sports and other activities.

About Foundational Skills: The Building Blocks of Gymnastics
We don't teach gymnastics through static, repetitive drills. Instead, we use play to teach movement vocabulary. For example, rather than just telling a child to squat, we use wall-ball tosses to naturally correct their depth and form, ensuring they learn the motor pattern without the pressure of a traditional class. This technique keeps them engaged while we fix their stance.
Why Foundational Movement Matters
True athletic development starts long before a child attempts complex maneuvers like backflips or handstands. At Invictus Play, we prioritize physical literacy, which is the ability to move with competence and confidence in various environments. By focusing on foundational patterns, we set a trajectory for long-term health, injury prevention, and athletic ability.
Our Core Movement Patterns
We break down gymnastics into essential building blocks that transfer to all sports:
- Pogo Jumps: These develop reactive power and tendon resiliency. By teaching kids to jump and land with control, we build the spring-like mechanics essential for all gymnastic routines.
- Wall Squats: This is the cornerstone of lower body strength. We guide children to master the correct form for maximum stability, ensuring their knees and hips work together safely.
- Hip Hinges: By introducing movements like kettlebell swings (or weighted equivalents), we activate the posterior chain. This prevents lower back strain and is vital for sports like tennis and golf.
- Upper Body Pulling: Whether it's vertical pulling for bar work or horizontal pulling for tug-of-war, we build the robust back, arm, and shoulder strength required for almost every sport.
Learning Through Play
We believe that children learn best when they are fully immersed in a challenge. Our sessions at our Vasanth Nagar facility are designed to be a screen-free zone where focus is placed on physical activity and social collaboration. We don't lecture; we guide. Every session includes warm-ups, skill-specific games, and apparatus introduction, monitored by coaches who track your child's progress in flexibility, jump height, and coordination. This is not just about exercise; it's about building a body that can handle the challenges of sport and life.
