Gurmukhi & Devanagari Calligraphy
Bringing scripts closer to home. Whether it's a cherished poem or a personal message, I turn these beautiful languages into art you can keep.
This piece features the Gurmukhi letter 'ਘ' (Gha) for 'ਘਰ' (Ghar), which means home. I created a cityscape with watercolors to represent the feeling of home I found during my travels in Assam.
The Gurmukhi letter 'ਗ' (Ga) for 'ਗੱਲਬਾਤ' (Galbaat), which means conversation. I illustrated this with colorful speech bubbles to represent the beauty of a good chat.
For the Gurmukhi letter 'ਖ' (Kha), which stands for 'ਖੂਬਸੂਰਤ' (Khoobsoorat) or beautiful, I created this intricate floral doodle. It's a style I find very meditative and joyful.
This was my first piece for the #35daysofgurmukhi challenge, featuring 'ੳ' (Oora). The word I chose was 'ਉਮੀਦ' (Umeed), which means hope. It felt like the perfect way to start the journey.
I experimented with 3D lettering for the Gurmukhi letter 'ਕ' (Kaka). It was a challenge to figure out the perspective, but I was happy with how this bold, block-style letter turned out.
This is the Gurmukhi letter 'ਅ' (Aira), done in a bevel style with gouache paint. I love the combination of the bright yellow background with the grey and black shading.
Another bevel lettering piece, this time for the Gurmukhi letter 'ੲ' (Eeri). I played with four shades of grey and teal to create the 3D effect.
About this collection
Creating a piece in Gurmukhi or Devanagari isn't just about the ink; it's about finding the right rhythm for your specific text. When we work together on these scripts, I help you select paper and ink combinations—like metallic gold or deep Sumi black—that enhance the natural flow of the letters, ensuring the final piece feels balanced, authentic, and ready to frame.
My journey with Gurmukhi and Devanagari started as a way to reconnect with my roots, and it has evolved into a space where language meets art. Unlike English calligraphy which often relies on strict copperplate rules, Indian scripts possess a distinct geometry and flow that requires a different approach to composition.
Why These Scripts Matter
Each letter in Gurmukhi and Devanagari carries a weight and history. When I letter a word like 'Umeed' (hope) or 'Ibadat' (prayer), I am conscious of the curves and strokes that define the character of the language. It is my way of preserving a piece of our heritage.
The Process
We start by choosing your medium. Do you want the timeless feel of Sumi black ink on textured cotton paper, or perhaps something more vibrant like metallic gold on a deep background?
- Consultation: We discuss the verse, poem, or message you want to preserve.
- Layout: I plan the spacing to respect the structure of the script, ensuring it looks visually harmonious.
- Refinement: From watercolor washes to hand-torn deckled edges, I add finishing touches that turn your text into a piece of art suitable for framing.
Whether you are looking to honor a traditional blessing or want a modern, artistic take on a favorite Punjabi or Hindi quote, I am here to help you get it right. These pieces are not just for display; they are keepsakes designed to hold meaning for years to come.
