Soulful Sufi & Qawwali Mehfils

My Sufi sets are rarely about just singing hits. I usually work with a mix of tabla, guitar, and harmonium to keep that raw, unplugged feel. A true mehfil is about more than just songs. It is about a shared frequency. When I step onto the stage, whether in a private villa in Dubai or a family home in Delhi, I am looking to bridge the gap between performer and audience. My sets are rooted in the teachings of my Ustad, keeping the essence of Sufi kalaams and Qawwalis alive while occasionally weaving in unplugged Bollywood ballads that everyone knows by heart.

What to expect from a Sufi Mehfil:

• The Setup: For an authentic Sufi experience, I often suggest an acoustic ensemble. We typically use a combination of tabla, acoustic guitar, and occasionally a violin or harmonium. This keeps the sound warm and allows the poetry to shine without being drowned out by heavy backing tracks.
• The Vibe: These are best suited for smaller, seated gatherings where guests can listen to the lyrics and soak in the atmosphere. Think Haldi ceremonies, intimate Sangeet dinners, or welcome nights.
• Customisation: I encourage you to share your favorite ghazals or specific qawwalis beforehand. While I have a setlist, the most magical moments are usually the ones requested in the moment that match the mood of the room.
• Logistics: Because Sufi music relies heavily on vocal nuances and acoustic instruments, please ensure your sound team is ready for an unplugged requirement rather than a commercial dance setup. Clear communication with your venue’s AV person regarding mic placement makes a massive difference in the clarity of the performance.
