Battle Prep & Hip Hop Dance Insights
Yo, I’m Hemanth. I’ve been through enough battles to know that winning isn't just about the dance. Here is how I prepare for the stage.
Traveling to Delhi for a battle? I put together some key tips to help you prepare, from getting enough rest to making sure you have time to shop after the event. Check it out.
About Battle Tips & Insights
Before a big battle, most dancers make the mistake of going all out in the pre-event cyphers. I always tell my students to save that explosive energy. Spend the morning on mobility and light flow, not power moves, so you are fresh when the judge actually calls your name.
Preparation is the difference between a good run and a great battle. Here is what I focus on when I am heading to a competition:
The Travel Mindset
If you are traveling to a different city, don't arrive on the day of the battle. Give your body 24 hours to recover from travel fatigue. You need to adjust to the climate and the floor surface. I always try to see the venue beforehand to get a feel for the stage so there are no surprises when the music drops.
Nutrition & Energy
Avoid heavy, oily food on competition days. You want light, energy-dense meals that won't make you sluggish. Hydration is non-negotiable. I stick to water and fruits. If you are fueled properly, your endurance will last through the later rounds.
The Mental Game
Battle stress is real. My advice is to treat the battle like a regular practice session back at your home studio. Don't worry about the audience or the judge’s reputation. Focus on your own foundation, your musicality, and having fun. If you are tense, it shows in your movement. When you are calm, your personal style comes out naturally.
If you are prepping for your next big event or just want to refine your technique, hit me up. We can talk through your specific goals.
