Commercial Landscape Design: The Greenlab Factory
At the Greenlab factory in Surat, we transformed a rigid industrial structure into a living, breathing workspace. By weaving nature into the architecture, we created a thriving environment that feels as open as it looks.
The main entrance to the Greenlab factory, where a canopy of hanging grasses creates a dramatic and natural porte-cochère. This design element immediately establishes the building's connection to the landscape.
A view of the Greenlab building where layers of greenery, from flowering shrubs to cascading wall creepers, create a rich tapestry against the brick. This approach to commercial landscape design makes the structure feel alive.
The morning light at the Greenlab campus highlights the textures of the stone paving and the variety of plants at the entrance. The design provides a beautiful and calm arrival experience for employees and visitors.
Another perspective on the Greenlab facade, showing the interplay between the structured garden beds and the wilder, cascading greenery. This balance is key to my philosophy of integrated landscape architecture.
An office view that erases the boundary between the workspace and the garden. The outdoor terrace provides a tranquil breakout space, directly connecting the indoor environment with the natural world.
A quiet moment on the terrace at Greenlab. The tall grasses provide a soft, natural screen, creating a sense of privacy and immersion in nature, even within a corporate campus.
This drone photograph reveals the overall site plan and planting strategy. The curved pathways and organic shapes of the garden beds contrast with the building's geometry, creating a harmonious composition.
I designed the landscape to curve and wrap around the building's concrete forms. This aerial shot shows how the pathways and garden beds merge with the architecture, creating a single, cohesive design.
The entrance to the corporate building is framed by layers of green. I used a mix of low ground cover, flowering shrubs, and tall grasses to build a multi-dimensional and inviting entryway.
The soft ornamental grasses planted atop the concrete umbrella columns add a delicate touch to the strong architectural elements. This is a clear example of how landscape can add meaning and softness to built forms.
About Commercial Landscapes: The Greenlab Factory
The Greenlab factory project in Surat demonstrates how we soften rigid industrial structures through layered planting. By combining cascading creepers with hardy ornamental grasses, we bridge the gap between heavy brick architecture and the natural world, creating a workspace that cools naturally while offering a calming visual escape.
Transforming a large-scale industrial site requires a balance between aesthetic softness and functional durability. For the Greenlab campus, our goal was to integrate the landscape so thoroughly that the building feels like it is emerging from the ground. We used custom-fabricated steel trellises and mesh cages to support heavy creepers, turning standard concrete columns into vertical green gardens.
Beyond the visual impact, this project prioritizes climate responsiveness. The dense layers of greenery act as natural thermal buffers, significantly reducing heat buildup against the brick facade. We selected native grasses and drought-tolerant species that thrive in the local Surat climate, ensuring that the landscape remains lush with minimal water usage.
Working alongside the architects, we zoned the campus to include both functional transition areas for vehicular movement and quiet, shaded breakout zones for employees. This approach proves that corporate spaces do not have to be cold or sterile. By focusing on sustainable campus landscaping and long-term plant maturity, we ensure these outdoor environments grow more vibrant and effective with every passing season.
