Urban Oases: Transforming Small Spaces
Turning cramped urban plots into thriving, multi-layered tropical forests. See how we use vertical greening and native creepers to create breathing room in the city.
This narrow passage for a commercial outlet in Mumbai was turned into a vibrant green corridor. By using vertical climbers and a curved seating area, I maximized the utility and beauty of the small space.
The main seating area of the Naturals NOW project, shaded by a dense canopy of creepers. The dappled light filtering through the leaves creates a tranquil atmosphere, offering an escape from the busy city.
This published feature shows the project in detail. The design creates a cocoon of plants for customers, using light and shadow from the overhead trellis to create a dramatic garden experience.
An overhead and side view of the Naturals NOW project. You can see how the steel structure provides a framework for the green walls and canopy, creating a complete "scoop of nature" for visitors.
The flowering creepers on the overhead trellis add a touch of color to the green canopy. It is so satisfying to see the plants mature and fill out the space exactly as planned.
A customer enjoys the shade of the green canopy. The design provides a comfortable and cool outdoor seating area, proving that even small commercial spaces can benefit from thoughtful landscape architecture.

About this collection
Working with a footprint this small means we have to build upwards. At the Naturals NOW project, I installed a steel trellis framework to support heavy creeper growth, turning the vertical walls into living canopies. It is a design strategy that creates an immediate sense of scale and privacy, even when you have less than ten feet of ground to work with.
When you are dealing with a compact urban plot in Mumbai, every square inch counts. My approach to these small gardens isn't to force a layout, but to create a 'scoop of nature' that fits the available space. In the case of this Juhu project, the challenge was to create an experience centre that felt lush and private despite being surrounded by concrete and busy roads.
The Vertical Strategy
Since the ground footprint was minimal, I focused on verticality. We designed a custom steel structure that serves as both an aesthetic frame and a functional trellis for flowering creepers. Over time, these plants have matured to form a dense green canopy that filters harsh sunlight and provides a natural sound buffer from the city noise outside.
Designing for Growth
I don't believe in landscapes that look 'finished' the day they are installed. A healthy garden evolves. We used a perforated floor design that allows the roots to breathe and ensures proper drainage, which is crucial in a monsoon-heavy climate like Mumbai. By selecting native plant species that thrive in low-maintenance conditions, the garden has become self-sustaining, growing thicker and lusher with every season.
Practical Considerations
- Plant Selection: I prioritize shade-loving climbers that naturally follow the trellis framework.
- Lighting: We integrated linear LED strips to highlight the textures of the foliage at night, making the space feel like an evening retreat.
- Maintenance: The design incorporates automated drip irrigation, ensuring the plants receive consistent water without requiring constant manual intervention.
Whether it is a tiny café entrance or a narrow residential passage, these small projects prove that you do not need acres of land to have a meaningful connection with nature.
Hemali Landscape Studio
I am Hemali, and I see landscape architecture as a way to bring nature back into our daily routines, especially where it is missing most. My studio focuses on building relationships between buildings and biology, letting plants soften concrete over time. If you want a space that evolves with the seasons rather than one that stays static, we should talk.
