Turning cramped urban plots into thriving, multi-layered tropical forests. See how we use vertical greening and native creepers to create breathing room in the city.

This narrow passage for a commercial outlet in Mumbai was turned into a vibrant green corridor. By using vertical climbers and a curved seating area, I maximized the utility and beauty of the small space.

The main seating area of the Naturals NOW project, shaded by a dense canopy of creepers. The dappled light filtering through the leaves creates a tranquil atmosphere, offering an escape from the busy city.

This published feature shows the project in detail. The design creates a cocoon of plants for customers, using light and shadow from the overhead trellis to create a dramatic garden experience.

An overhead and side view of the Naturals NOW project. You can see how the steel structure provides a framework for the green walls and canopy, creating a complete "scoop of nature" for visitors.

The flowering creepers on the overhead trellis add a touch of color to the green canopy. It is so satisfying to see the plants mature and fill out the space exactly as planned.

A customer enjoys the shade of the green canopy. The design provides a comfortable and cool outdoor seating area, proving that even small commercial spaces can benefit from thoughtful landscape architecture.

This view shows the different zones within the small garden, including seating nooks and a central planter around an existing tree. The design makes efficient use of every square foot to create a varied experience.

A design schematic and photo from the Naturals NOW project publication. The concept was to create a complete sensory experience within a very restricted footprint, which we achieved through careful plant selection and structural design.

About Urban Oases: Transforming Small Spaces

Working with a footprint this small means we have to build upwards. At the Naturals NOW project, I installed a steel trellis framework to support heavy creeper growth, turning the vertical walls into living canopies. It is a design strategy that creates an immediate sense of scale and privacy, even when you have less than ten feet of ground to work with.
