Carving & Surface Design: Personalize Your Pottery
Bring your stories to life on clay. Learn to use sgraffito and carving techniques to etch patterns, memories, and textures into your handmade pieces.
A close-up of creating pieces that bring joy. Here, I am using a carving tool to etch a mountain landscape onto a mug. This surface decoration technique adds a personal and artistic touch.
This pierced and carved piece is being prepared to become a lamp. The process of carving away clay to create patterns is slow and detailed, but the way the light will shine through makes it all worth it.
Watch the process of making a tiny incense holder, from carving floral sgraffito designs on the plate to building the little house. It's these small, detailed projects that I find so satisfying.
Sometimes it's all about the texture. In this video, I'm using a loop tool to carve lines into the surface of a clay sculpture, creating a wood-grain effect that adds depth and character.
About Adding Your Story: Carving & Design
You might worry that carving detailed designs into clay requires years of practice, but the process is surprisingly forgiving. In these sessions, we focus on sgraffito, where we layer colored slips over the clay and carve back through to reveal contrasting patterns. If your line wobbles or your hand slips, we simply embrace it as part of your piece's character—it's those little quirks that make your work a 'jigar ka tukda' (piece of your heart).
While the pottery wheel is great for shaping, the real magic happens when you start decorating. This cluster is for those who want to move beyond basic bowls and vases to create narrative art. Whether you are carving a mountain landscape inspired by a trek or piercing delicate floral patterns into a lamp, this workshop is about slowing down and letting your hands do the storytelling.
What to Expect
We start with leather-hard clay, which is the perfect stage for surface work. You will learn to use loop tools for carving textures, fine needles for detailed illustrations, and underglazes to add layers of color. It is a meditative, quiet process. You do not need to be a skilled illustrator; even simple geometric patterns or meaningful symbols can transform a piece into something deeply personal.
The Process
- Sgraffito: We paint colored slip onto the clay and carve away sections to reveal the base color underneath. It creates a bold, graphic look that highlights every line you draw.
- Piercing/Cutwork: By carving small openings through the clay wall, we create pieces like lanterns or incense holders that play with shadow and light. It is a slow, rhythmic process that requires patience, but the result is always rewarding.
- The Surprise: As with all my work, the final firing is where the real alchemy happens. Once your piece is carved and painted, I manage the professional glazing and high-temperature kiln firing. Your finished, food-safe creation will be ready to collect in about three weeks.
This is not about chasing the perfect, factory-made finish. It is about the marks you leave behind. If you are looking for a creative escape in Delhi NCR that lets you combine mindfulness with tangible art, this is where you start.
