About Adding Color: Painting & Underglazing

Think of underglazing as painting on a canvas, but with clay. Unlike standard glazing which creates a glossy, flowing coat, underglazes act like watercolors for your pottery. You can sketch, shade, and add fine detail to your designs without worrying about the colors bleeding together when fired in the kiln.

Painting on pottery is where the technical process of clay-making meets pure artistic expression. In my sessions, we focus on underglazing—a method that allows for high precision and intricate details, which is why it is perfect for everything from whimsical cartoons to complex floral illustrations.

What to Expect

When you come to the studio, we work with bisqueware (clay that has already been fired once). This surface is porous and ready to accept color. You will learn how to:

  • Prepare your surface: Ensuring your piece is free of dust for a smooth application.
  • Apply underglazes: Using specific brushes to layer color, creating depth and gradients.
  • Carve and texture: Techniques like sgraffito, where we scratch through the layer of color to reveal the clay body beneath, adding a tactile element to your work.

The Process & Firing

It is important to understand that underglazing is the decorative stage. Once your design is finished, I will apply a transparent glaze over your work before the final firing. This seals your painting, making it food-safe and permanent. The final result is a piece that you have not only shaped but also illustrated from scratch.

Whether you are looking for a weekend escape in Delhi or a regular creative outlet, these painting workshops are designed to be a meditative break from the screen. No prior art experience is needed; just bring your ideas and a bit of patience.
