Dish & Bowl Gardens
These open arrangements are like miniature landscapes viewed from above. We create diverse setups, from lush, tropical foliage bowls to serene dish gardens featuring mini bonsai trees.
This dish garden features a miniature Peepal tree, styled as a bonsai, as its centerpiece. I built a tiny landscape around it with natural rocks and a small resin pond to create a complete, serene scene.
A lush and vibrant bowl garden designed to look like a patch of tropical forest floor. I used a combination of ferns and colorful foliage plants to create a dense, textured arrangement in this large ceramic bowl.
About Dish & Bowl Gardens
The key difference between these and a standard pot is the landscape design. When we put these together, we focus on the view from above, arranging rocks, moss, and foliage to create a miniature ecosystem that feels complete. Since these are open, they need a bit more airflow and light than a closed terrarium, so finding the right spot near a window is the first step to keeping them happy.
These are essentially miniature worlds you can keep on a desk or coffee table. While a terrarium is often about watching a closed cycle, a dish or bowl garden is about the art of composition. We use wide, shallow vessels because they give you the best vantage point for these tiny landscapes.
For our tropical foliage bowls, we use a mix of moisture-loving plants like ferns and calatheas. The secret here is the substrate. We do not just dump soil in. We layer LECA for drainage, add activated charcoal to keep the water fresh, and then use a nutrient-rich mix. If you let water sit at the bottom of a shallow bowl, it can get swampy, so the drainage layer is non-negotiable.
If you are looking for something more structured, we do mini bonsai setups. Using hardy species that can tolerate container living, we shape the roots and branches to mimic a full-sized tree in a landscape scene.
Care is straightforward. Because these are open, you will need to mist the foliage occasionally and check the soil moisture. They do not need direct harsh sunlight, but they definitely prefer a bright, airy corner. If you have a specific bowl or ceramic dish at home you have been wanting to use, we can also come over and turn that into a custom landscape. It is a great way to reuse what you already have while bringing a little bit of the outdoors inside.
