About this collection
Because each piece is carved into natural river boulders, the shape and texture will never match a catalog image exactly. When you choose a niche or plaque, you are picking the specific stone and the deity or motif carved into it. Our pieces are heavy and meant for permanence, so we recommend deciding on your placement—be it a garden corner or a wall mount—before they arrive.
The Story in the Stone
Our approach to these niches comes from a simple desire: to bring the sacred atmosphere of South Indian temples into daily life. We start with raw, natural boulders—granite or sandstone—and work with artisans from Karnataka and Nepal to reveal the form hidden inside. This is true kai kelasa (handiwork). We don't try to force a uniform look. Instead, we let the natural shape of the rock dictate the final design, whether it is a serene Buddha, a playful Bala Krishna, or a mythical Yali.
Bringing History Home
Many of these designs are inspired by temple carvings we have seen across our travels. The Gandaberunda plaque, for instance, reflects the power and history of Karnataka, while our slate carvings from Nepal bring a different, intricate style of craftsmanship to our collection. Whether you are looking for a small plaque to mount near your entryway or a larger, boulder-cut niche for a garden feature, these pieces are designed to age gracefully. Because we use natural stone, they weather well, developing a rich patina over time that only adds to their character.
Practical Details for Your Space
When choosing a piece, consider both the weight and the stone type. Krishna Shila (black stone) is dense and deep-colored, often used for intricate deity carvings, while our sandstone pieces offer warmer, earthy tones. If you are placing a niche outdoors, consider the light. These carvings are designed to catch shadows, so a spot that gets morning or evening sun will highlight the chisel marks and textures much better than a flat, brightly lit area. If you live in Bangalore, we invite you to our Anjanapura warehouse to see these stones in person—sometimes the right piece is the one that calls to you when you walk through the door.
Greenhouse
We’re Dileep and Lakshman, and we’ve been blending botanicals with old-school craft since 2016. Our space in Anjanapura is half-jungle, half-home, where we hang out with our dogs, Scooby and Subbi, and work with local artisans to keep South India’s carving traditions alive.
