Oil & Acrylic Canvas Restoration
Assessment & Documentation
- Condition Report: Detailed physical and chemical examination using UV fluorescence and raking light to identify overpaint and structural issues.
- Photographic Log: High-resolution documentation of Before, During, and After stages to maintain provenance.
Structural & Surface Treatment
- Varnish Removal: Removal of oxidized yellow varnish and surface grime using custom solvent mixtures tested for binder safety.
- Tear Repair & Strip Lining: Mending canvas tears using thread-by-thread weaving and reinforcing weak edges to ensure tension stability.
- Consolidation: Re-adhering flaking paint to the canvas using conservation-grade adhesives.
Aesthetic Reintegration
- Reversible In-painting: Filling paint losses using conservation colors that remain soluble and distinct from the original artist's paint.
- Final Protection: Application of non-yellowing, UV-resistant protective varnish to seal the work.
Paper Art & Photograph Conservation
Chemical Stabilization
- De-acidification: Neutralizing paper acidity to arrest deterioration and preventing future yellowing.
- Foxing Treatment: Chemical reduction of reddish-brown fungal spots (foxing) and water stains without bleaching the paper white.
Physical Repair
- Japanese Tissue Mending: Repairing tears using long-fiber Japanese Kozo paper and wheat starch paste for invisible, reversible repairs.
- Flattening: Humidification and weighted drying processes to remove creases, ripples, and cockling.
Preventative Mounting
- Backing Removal: Removal of old, acidic cardboard or wood backings that cause chemical burns to the artwork.
- Archival Hinging: Attaching artwork to acid-free mounts using conservation hinges to allow natural expansion.
Antique Sculpture & Heirloom Restoration
Preservation & Cleaning
- Fumigation & Pest Control: Treatment for wood-boring insects, termites, and active fungal growth to halt biological decay.
- Deposit Removal: Specialized cleaning to remove layers of soot, oil, and kumkum encrusted on idols to reveal original carvings.
Structural Consolidation
- Material Stabilization: Injection of conservation resins into porous or rotting sections of wood and stone to strengthen internal structure.
- Joinery Repair: Re-securing loose limbs or segments using non-corrosive dowels and reversible adhesives.
Aesthetic Completion
- Loss Compensation: Modeling missing geometric elements (like chipped fingers) using identifiable restoration materials.
- Protective Coating: Application of micro-crystalline wax or metal lacquers to prevent oxidation and moisture absorption.
About Art Conservation & Restoration
We treat every artwork like it’s carrying memories - not just paint and canvas, but a real story ki (that) deserves respect. Our work isn’t about making things look “brand new” - there’s beauty in the patina, in those marks left by time. When we step in, we’re not erasing a journey, we’re protecting it.
How We Approach Restoration
- We focus on ethical art repair, never over-restoring or hiding what makes a piece unique.
- Conservation is a mix of science and heart - you’ll find us researching materials, consulting art history, and sometimes teaming up with legends like Master Restorer Rupika Chawla.
- Our promise is reversibility: jo bhi karte hain, woh future mein safe tarike se hata bhi sakte hain (whatever we do, it can be safely removed in the future). That’s non-negotiable for us.
What We Do
- Conservation of canvas paintings, works on paper, and heritage objects
- Repairing damage, cleaning up old or neglected pieces, and prepping them for long-term preservation
- Tackling complex projects, including large-scale restoration of cultural artifacts and professional reframing
Past Projects
We’ve brought everything from temple chariots to Bengal School paintings back to life. Each project is a new story - old memories, revived with care.
This is Shilpo - the soul of art and creation, the reason we do what we do.
