Ivy Lane Villa: A Heritage Home Renovation
Tejaswini of Furbishy breathes new life into this three-decade-old Bengaluru bungalow, blending classic colonial architecture with modern, functional living.
Architectural Digest featured my renovation of this three-decade-old family home, the Ivy Lane Villa. The article highlighted my approach to preserving the home's vintage value while infusing it with contemporary functionality and our signature pop of color.

This view into the living room, captured by Architectural Digest, showcases the home's character. The design features exposed wooden ceiling beams, a classic chandelier, and a mix of modern and cane furniture, reflecting my philosophy of layering textures and eras.
AD highlighted the living room's restored fireplace and custom TV unit, framed by classic wall molding. This detail shot shows how I integrate modern necessities like televisions into a space without sacrificing its traditional charm.

About As Seen In: Architectural Digest
This renovation proves that you do not need to tear down the past to build a modern home. For the Ivy Lane Villa, my focus was on saving original architectural elements like the colonial columns and high ceilings, while subtly introducing modern utility through custom joinery—like the arched, sage-green entry door that sets the color story for the entire house.
Renovating an older property, especially a 30-year-old bungalow like Ivy Lane Villa, requires a delicate touch. You are not just dealing with aesthetic preferences but with the structural realities of a building that has seen decades of life. My approach here was to retain the vintage soul—the high ceilings, the colonial columns, and the layout—while upgrading the systems to meet modern standards.
The standout feature for many in this project was our use of color and texture. Notice the sage green arched doorway; it was a deliberate choice to add a fresh, vibrant layer to the white-washed colonial backdrop. We did not want to hide the original wall moldings, so we worked around them, integrating custom TV units and storage that felt like they had always been part of the house.
For anyone considering a major home renovation, the biggest hurdle is usually balancing the old with the new. It is about knowing when to restore and when to replace. Whether it is integrating a modern bar unit into an antique dining space or installing new flooring without disrupting the home’s flow, I focus on seamless transitions. This project highlights my commitment to working with original architecture rather than against it, ensuring your home remains a reflection of history while becoming fully functional for your current lifestyle.
