Courtyard and Natural Light Architecture in Bengaluru
Our approach to architecture focuses on bringing nature inside. Through internal courtyards, skylights, and strategic ventilation, we create living spaces that remain bright and airy throughout the day, rooted in sustainable design principles.
This central courtyard in the Chatty Residence is a core element of the home's design, bringing light and nature into the surrounding living spaces. It functions as a private green oasis that enhances the home's ventilation and overall sense of well-being.
Even in a compact area, we can create a vibrant green space. This small courtyard at the Prabhakar Residence uses vertical planters and staggered stone shelves to establish a lush garden feature visible from inside the home.
Viewed from the interior, the courtyard at the Prabhakar Residence becomes a living mural. The wide, foldable wooden doors allow the space to be fully opened up, merging the indoor living area with the outdoor garden.
About Light, Air & Green Spaces
Effective climate control begins with the placement of structural voids. In projects like the Chatty Residence, we use internal courtyards not just for greenery, but as the lungs of the house, drawing cool air in while venting hot air out through roof skylights. This design ensures your home naturally stays comfortable without relying on artificial cooling.
Designing for Bengaluru’s Climate
Bengaluru's temperate climate allows for a unique approach to indoor-outdoor living. We analyze the solar path of every site to ensure skylights and windows provide warmth without inducing excessive heat gain. This process involves careful orientation and the use of thermal mass materials like stone and brick, which absorb heat during the day and release it slowly at night, keeping interiors stable.
Courtyards as Functional Elements
More than aesthetic features, our courtyards serve as the core of the home's microclimate. By creating double-height volumes or central atriums, we establish pressure differences that naturally draw fresh air through living spaces. Whether it is a compact urban plot or a larger estate, these spaces ground the architecture in the landscape and provide a constant visual connection to the garden.
Our Technical Approach
- Solar Path Analysis: We use precise positioning of louvers and high-level windows to maximize daylight while minimizing direct glare.
- Thermal Regulation: Using materials like exposed brick and Kota stone to regulate ambient indoor temperatures.
- Integration: We design seamless thresholds where indoor floors fold out into garden areas, blurring the boundary between your living room and nature.
