How we build your organic kitchen garden
Building a thriving kitchen garden in the city is less about innate talent and more about understanding the mitti. Here is how we turn your balcony or terrace into a productive, organic space.
My goal is to help you transform your land into a productive organic farm. I guide you through every step, from planning and soil preparation to planting and harvesting.
The first step to any successful farm or garden is a solid plan. I help you evaluate your land's soil, climate, and water supply to set goals for a productive and sustainable setup.
The process of creating raised beds begins with clearing the land and removing any rubble to prepare a clean slate for the garden.
Next, I mark the layout of the veggie beds and walking paths using simple ropes or strings to ensure a well-organized and efficient garden design.
We then excavate the walking paths and use that soil to build up the height of the veggie beds, a clever technique that creates drainage and improves soil depth.
Careful alignment is checked before leveling the beds. This precision ensures that the garden is not only productive but also aesthetically pleasing.
Building the foundation of your garden is crucial. I enrich the soil by adding organic compost and natural fertilizers to boost fertility and nurture crops from the very start.
Once the raised beds are ready, they are used for planting. The walking areas are mulched to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and build healthy soil over time.
I help you select the right crops based on your soil, climate, and goals. Using crop rotation and native species ensures healthy growth and promotes biodiversity.
And then comes the magic. With the foundation laid, you can watch your veggie garden flourish day by day, growing into a lush and productive space.
About How It Works: Our Process & Tips
The secret to a lush balcony garden isn't just seeds, it is the soil depth and drainage. We start by building custom raised beds, often using treated pine wood, that protect your flooring while giving roots the loose, airy medium they need to flourish without getting waterlogged.
Building a productive garden in the city requires planning for specific constraints like sunlight, wind, and structural load. We do not believe in kitabi gyan (bookish knowledge) and instead focus on what actually grows in our climate.
Our Step-by-Step Approach
-
Space & Sunlight Analysis: Every garden starts with a conversation. We look at which direction your balcony faces—North or South makes a massive difference in what you can grow. We track where the sun hits so we can place your planters where they will actually thrive.
-
Infrastructure That Lasts: We use treated pine wood crates or brick masonry for raised beds. These aren't just for looks; they provide enough depth for root vegetables like carrots and arbi to grow properly. For railings, we use vertical planters to maximize space without cluttering your walking area.
-
The 'Mitti' Mix: This is the most important part. We don't just use soil; we create a custom lightweight growing medium using coco-peat, compost, and microbial cultures. This ensures your planters aren't too heavy for your balcony while remaining rich in nutrients.
-
Watering Logic: We install automated drip irrigation systems with battery-operated timers. This takes the guesswork out of watering, ensuring your plants get consistent moisture even during the harsh Delhi ki garmi (Delhi's heat).
-
Succession Planting: A garden should provide food all year. Once one crop is harvested, we rotate the next one. We teach you how to prune and when to sow so you always have fresh bhindi, palak, or tomatoes ready for your kitchen.
