Storytelling & Raising Readers
Books at Earthlings are launchpads for adventure. We turn storytime into interactive play using puppets, props, and nature exploration to help your child connect words to the world around them.
Our story selection for 'Water Worlds' week included classics like 'Tiddler' and 'Sharing a Shell'. These books are perfect for introducing marine life and themes of friendship and community.
We love a funny story. 'I Don't Want to Be a Frog' and 'The Big Wide-Mouthed Frog' are guaranteed to get the giggles going while exploring themes of self-acceptance.
For our swamp theme, we explored stories about crocodiles and gharials. We deliberately choose books with diverse authors and illustration styles to expand our littles' horizons.
We have so many wonderful books about turtles. These stories, both fiction and non-fiction, teach children about life cycles and the challenges these amazing creatures face.
What lives in a shell? These books and the accompanying props help children explore the fascinating world of the seashore, from hermit crabs to starfish.
Exploring the vibrant world of coral reefs through books. The stunning illustrations in 'The Brilliant Deep' and 'Life in a Coral Reef' captivate the children's imagination.
A journey to the bottom of the sea. These books take us to the mysterious world of the deep ocean, introducing creatures like whales, dolphins, and giant squid.
About this collection
Books at Earthlings are never just paper and ink. We pair every story with a 'story basket'—filled with props, puppets, or natural artifacts—to turn quiet reading time into an interactive discovery session. If we are reading about hermit crabs, you will likely find us hunting for shells or building sandcastles to understand their habitat before the book even closes.
Our approach to reading goes beyond sitting in a circle. We believe stories are the best way to introduce complex topics like conservation, life cycles, or global cultures. By selecting diverse authors and illustration styles, we gently expand your child's horizons, showing them that there is a vast, beautiful world out there waiting to be explored.
The 'Story Basket' Method
We don't just read; we enact. Whether it's a dramatic read-aloud where the kids get to be the characters, or using puppets to bring a story to life, we ensure the experience is multisensory. This helps children build context-specific vocabulary and gain a deeper understanding of the themes we are exploring, like our 'Water Worlds' or 'In the Garden' programs.
Why We Read
- Connecting the Dots: Every book is tied to our hands-on activities. A story about seeds leads to planting in our garden.
- Celebrating Diversity: We consciously choose books from different parts of the world to show children how different people live, look, and celebrate.
- Building Habits: We want to nurture a lifelong love for reading, not just get through a curriculum. That is why you will find cozy reading corners and plenty of time for children to simply pore over our illustrated encyclopedias and nature anatomy books.
At Earthlings, we want our littles to leave the library not just having heard a story, but having lived one.
Earthlings Early Years
We are two foodies who stumbled into the preschool world because we believe learning should be messy, tactile, and full of laughter. We treat every child like family, sharing stories, meals, and the kind of wonder that only comes from getting your hands dirty.
