Abstract Sculptures and Experimental Artworks by Pratap
Beyond my primary conceptual canvases, this collection showcases my experimental practice in sculpture and abstract form. These works represent my ongoing dialogue with materials and ideas developed during my time at Sir J.J. School of Art.
This video features sculptures from the 2025 annual exhibition of the Sir J.J. School of Art. It includes a realistic clay sculpture of a seated female figure and other abstract ceramic and stone works, showing my engagement with three-dimensional forms.
An abstract, framed artwork on a blue-grey canvas. This piece is an exercise in line and form, combining ink drawing with a central, textured element to create a dynamic, semi-figurative composition.
Another abstract work in a similar style, featuring a playful arrangement of lines and shapes that suggest a figure or creature. These smaller, experimental pieces allow me to explore different creative avenues.
About Additional Works & Studies
These sculptures and ink studies allow me to push beyond the boundaries of my primary canvas work. While my signature paintings rely on the layered application of acrylic, these experimental pieces in ceramic and ink are exercises in raw form, exploring the silent dialogue between light and shadow that often informs my larger conceptual projects.
My creative process is never confined to a single medium. During my studies at the Sir J.J. School of Art, I learned that true artistic inquiry requires an understanding of how weight, volume, and composition change when translated from two-dimensional sketches to three-dimensional structures. This cluster gathers the artifacts of those investigations.
The Shift to Three Dimensions
In my sculpture work, I move away from the flat woven-bamboo texture of my paintings and instead focus on the weight of the material. Whether working with clay or stone, my aim is to capture human emotion in a static, physical form. You will notice a recurring theme of introspection in these pieces, mirroring the same subconscious struggle that drives my brushstrokes on canvas. These works are not merely aesthetic objects; they are technical studies in how a single figure can occupy space and command the mood of a room.
Experimental Ink Studies
My ink-on-canvas compositions serve as a bridge between my live sketching practice and my large-scale acrylic works. These pieces focus on line economy—the ability to suggest a complex shape or movement with minimal intervention. For a collector, these studies offer an intimate look at my creative methodology. They lack the heavy varnish or elaborate layering of my signature series, presenting instead the unvarnished, raw impulse of an idea before it is expanded into a conceptual mural or canvas.
Why These Pieces Matter
These experimental works often precede my major gallery exhibitions. They are where I test the limits of my technique, specifically regarding the interplay of abstract ink lines and physical texture. Acquiring a piece from this collection means owning a fragment of my artistic development, offering a unique contrast if displayed alongside more traditional contemporary paintings.
Pratap Badtya
I am Pratap. My art is not just about what is seen, but what is felt below the surface. Whether I am working with a large canvas or a piece of clay, I aim to translate the silence of our ancestral memories into form.
