Live Performance Venues and Audiences for Carnatic Veena
I perform everywhere from intimate temple corners to grand concert halls, and each audience brings its own unique energy to the music.
A short and sweet concert organized by Sangeeta Sambrama in Jaynagar. Intimate settings like these allow for a very personal connection with the audience.

With the organizers after my concert at Sringeri Shankar Mutt in Hassan. It was a beautiful way to end the Dasara festival.
A view of the packed audience at my concert in Hassan. It's so heartening to see so many people, young and old, coming to listen to classical music.
About Audiences & Venues
Whether it is an intimate gathering in Jayanagar or a large festival crowd at Sringeri Mutt, the acoustics of the venue and the engagement of the listeners change how I play.
When I step onto a stage, the space itself becomes an instrument. In larger auditoriums like those at the Bengaluru International Arts Festival, I focus on the projection of the Tarangini Veena to ensure every note reaches the back rows clearly. These venues usually have professional sound systems where my team and I spend extra time on the sound check to balance the veena with percussionists like the mridangam or ghatam.
Conversely, playing in smaller, traditional spaces like temple courtyards offers a completely different experience. These venues, often with stone architecture, have natural resonance that brings out the deep, earthy tones of the instrument without needing complex amplification. The proximity to the audience allows for a musical dialogue where I can see their reactions, which often influences the choice of ragas or the pace of the kritis I select on the spot.
For private events or home concerts, the setup is more relaxed but requires careful planning to ensure the sound is warm and not overpowering. I adapt my repertoire to fit the vibe of the room, whether it is a quiet devotional setting or a festive celebration. Regardless of the setting, my goal remains the same: to create a space where the listener feels connected to the music, just as I am.
Suma Sudhindra
I am Suma, and for me, the stage is where I feel most at home. Whether I am playing for a small group in a living room or a massive crowd at a festival, it is the connection with people that drives my music.
