Jaguars of the Pantanal: Wildlife Photography Expeditions
The Pantanal is a unique water-world where the jaguar reigns supreme. Join me on these boat-based expeditions, designed to put you in the right spot for capturing this elusive predator in its natural habitat.
My first jaguar sighting in the Pantanal was a moment I'll never forget. This magnificent cat, with its powerful build and beautiful rosette coat, simply took my breath away. They are masters of their environment, equally at home in the water as they are on land.
A jaguar peers through the dense foliage, a true 'ghost in the woods'. Their ability to camouflage is astounding, and spotting one is a testament to the sharp eyes and local knowledge of our guides.
These additional shots show the challenge and reward of photographing jaguars. They are masters of stealth, and capturing a clear image of them in their dense, jungle habitat requires immense patience and quick reflexes.

About Jaguars of the Pantanal
Capturing a jaguar in the Pantanal requires moving beyond traditional vehicle safaris. We use specialized speedboats to navigate narrow river channels, which places us at water level for that dramatic, intimate eye-contact shot. You will need to manage complex lighting conditions here, as the dense forest canopy creates intense highlights and deep shadows that can easily trick your camera’s light meter.
The Pantanal is fundamentally different from the open savannahs of Africa or the dense jungles of India. Because the jaguar is comfortable in the water, hunting caimans and fish, the river is our primary road. On my Global Apex Predator expeditions, we base ourselves in local Fazendas or floating lodges near the Cuiabá River to maximize our time on the water.
The Photographic Challenge
When we are out on the water, stability becomes your biggest technical hurdle. While I provide guidance on bean bag setups, you will need to practice rapid shutter speed adjustments. The jaguar’s coat blends seamlessly with the dappled light of the jungle bank. I teach you how to anticipate movement patterns and spot the 'ghost in the woods' before it fully reveals itself. We look for behavioral cues—birds calling, caimans diving—that suggest a predator is nearby.
Why Boat-Based Tracking
Unlike a land-based safari where you are confined to a track, a boat gives us the freedom to reach remote riverbanks where these cats rest. This approach provides unique, low-angle perspectives that make the jaguar look more imposing and powerful in the frame. We focus on respecting the animal’s space while getting close enough to see the texture of their rosettes. This is an intensive, on-location workshop where every drive is a chance to refine your exposure management and anticipation skills.

I have spent years chasing predators across continents, but the Pantanal feels like home. My goal is to get you close to these incredible animals, not just for the photograph, but for the connection that comes with witnessing them in their own element.
