Sitar Riyaaz and Technique Demonstrations
These snippets from my daily riyaaz focus on the fundamentals of Indian classical music. From exploring specific raags to refining fingering techniques, here is how we build a strong foundation during our sitar lessons.
A demonstration of Raag Bhimpalas, an afternoon raag known for its meditative and soulful character. In my classes, we delve into the theory and feeling of different raags to build a strong foundation in Indian classical music.
This is a clip from my morning riyaaz, playing Raag Miya ki Todi. Daily practice is essential for any musician, and I guide my students on how to structure their own practice for consistent improvement.
Exploring the nuances of Raag Marwa, an evening raag with a very distinct and powerful mood. Advanced students learn to master such complex raags and develop their own improvisational style.
A short, informal practice session playing Raag Jhinjoti. Even simple, melodic raags like this offer a great opportunity to work on fingering techniques and clarity of sound, which are key skills for beginner sitar students.
About The Art of Riyaaz: Sitar Demonstrations
Many students ask if they need a formal foundation in music theory before starting lessons. While theory like Bhatkhande notation is part of our curriculum, I teach it alongside the instrument itself. We start by building your muscle memory with Mizrab strokes and basic Alankars, ensuring you feel comfortable with the instrument's weight and balance before we move into complex Raag structures.
My approach to teaching is built on the Guru-Shishya parampara, a tradition that focuses on personal attention and consistency. When you watch these practice clips, you are seeing the same process I teach in our group baithaks and private sessions.
The Practice Methodology
Consistent practice is the only way to master the sitar. In our lessons, we break down the 'how' behind the sound:
- Foundational Technique: We prioritize correct seating, hand placement, and Mizrab (finger-pick) strokes to ensure you can play for longer sessions without strain.
- Raag Exploration: We don't just memorize notes. We explore the mood and structure of raags like Bhimpalas, Miya ki Todi, and Jhinjoti. This helps you understand why a raag is played a certain way, rather than just playing it.
- Advanced Improvisation: For those moving toward advanced mentorship, we focus on Gayaki Ang (vocal-style playing), exploring techniques like Meend (pulling the string) and Gamak (oscillation) to bring life to your performance.
Learning in a Baithak Environment
I keep the batch sizes small, capped at 4 to 8 students. This mimics the traditional baithak setting, allowing for real-time feedback on your fingering and rhythm. Whether you are a total beginner or a professional looking to polish your stagecraft, we adjust the pace to fit your learning curve. You are not just learning a syllabus; you are learning how to listen to the music you create.
