A window into the discipline of my daily practice, showcasing the technical beauty and emotional spectrum of Hindustani classical music.

A rendition of Raag Shyam Kalyan in Vilambit Teentaal, a slow 16-beat cycle. This Raag is typically performed in the evening and has a serene, meditative quality.

Welcoming the monsoon with the beautiful strains of Raag Gaud Malhar. This is a traditional monsoon Raag, and its notes are meant to evoke the feeling of rain.

Presenting a composition I created in Raag Gawati, set to Teentaal. Composing within the strict framework of a Raag is a deeply creative and fulfilling process.

Practicing fast 'taans' in Raag Yaman from my home studio. This kind of rigorous practice, or 'riyaz', is essential for maintaining speed and clarity in performance.

A short performance of Raag Alhaiya Bilawal, a morning Raag known for its bright and devotional mood. The composition is set in the 16-beat cycle of Teentaal.

Playing a 'drut bandish' or fast composition in Raag Bihag. This late-night Raag is romantic and expressive, building to a powerful climax.

An excerpt of Raag Malkauns, a profound and meditative midnight Raag. Its melody is ancient and carries a deep sense of introspection.

Demonstrating the 'Jod' and 'Jhala' sections of Raag Shyam Kalyan. These sections follow the 'Alaap' and build rhythmic momentum before the Tabla enters.

A practice session focusing on the intricate melodic phrases of Raag Puriya. This evening Raag requires precise control and emotional depth.

A quiet moment of practice, exploring the phrases of Raag Shyam Kalyan. This is where the foundation of a performance is built, through hours of dedicated 'riyaz'.

About Exploring Raags: Solo Sitar Recitals

In these solo recitals, I document my riyaaz (practice) and explorations of specific Ragas. Whether it is the meditative depth of Malkauns or the celebratory energy of Durga, each performance focuses on the structural nuances—the alaap for mood setting and the rhythmic complexity of teentaal.

The journey of learning and performing the Sitar is one of constant refinement. In this cluster, I share the process behind a performance, focusing on the Imdadkhani Gharana style, which emphasizes gayaki ang (vocal-like phrasing).

Each Raga serves a distinct purpose:

  • Mood and Timing: Ragas like Malkauns are introspective and nocturnal, while morning Ragas like Alhaiya Bilawal bring a brighter, devotional quality. Understanding this temporal placement is essential to the impact of the recital.
  • Technical Progression: A traditional performance typically moves from the slow, unmetered alaap, which introduces the Raga's grammar, through the rhythmic pulse of jod, and finally into the fast-paced jhala.
  • Rhythmic Framework: While these videos are solo, my work often integrates the 16-beat teentaal cycle, requiring precise timing and control.

My practice sessions are not just about technical speed; they are about maintaining the emotional integrity of the notes. I believe that an audience appreciates the depth of the music when the artist explains the narrative behind the Raga. If you are looking for a classical recital that blends performance with a brief insight into the Raga's history and structure, these recitals provide a glimpse into that approach. I am based in West Patel Nagar, New Delhi, and available for bookings across India for private baithaks, corporate events, and cultural programs.

I have dedicated my life to the Sitar, following the traditions of the Imdadkhani Gharana. For me, music is not just performance; it is a discipline that connects the artist to the listener through the eternal language of Ragas.
