Gurupoornima: Our Annual Sitar Student Showcase
See the growth of my students at our annual Gurupoornima showcase. This is where the sitar music we study in the studio comes to life on stage.
A view from the audience at our Gurupoornima concert. Parents and friends gather to watch the students showcase the skills they have developed over the year, creating a truly encouraging atmosphere for these young performers.
My students, aged 8 to 19, performing a group sitar composition on stage. This annual concert is a key part of my teaching method, designed to build confidence and give students a tangible goal to work towards.
A proud moment with my students after their successful performances. We work together in a relaxed, baithak style setting, and seeing their joy and camaraderie is the greatest reward for me as a teacher.
About Gurupoornima: Our Annual Student Showcase
This concert is the highlight of our year, featuring my students performing solos and group compositions with live tabla accompaniment. It is where the discipline of our studio sessions meets the energy of a real audience, giving every student, from beginner to advanced, a tangible goal to work toward.
My approach to teaching is rooted in the Guru-Shishya parampara, a tradition that prioritizes patience and personal connection. We don't just focus on the technique; we build a foundation where students feel comfortable enough to express their own musicality.
Why Performance Matters
I believe performing is the fastest way to build confidence. Whether a student is six years old or a working professional, stepping onto the stage and playing with live tabla players teaches them to listen and respond in real-time. This isn't about playing along to recorded tracks; it is about the spontaneous, live interaction that is central to Hindustani classical music.
The Learning Path
My classes in Mumbai follow a specific, yet flexible structure:
- Beginners: We start with the basics of how to hold the sitar, understanding Mizrab strokes, and getting comfortable with simple Alankars.
- Intermediate: We progress to Raag theory, exploring pieces like Yaman, Bhupali, and Bhimpalas, and deepening our understanding of Taal and Laya.
- Advanced: For those ready for more, we dig into Gayaki Ang, complex improvisation, and the nuances of Meend and Gamak.
Building Your Sound
I limit my group baithak sessions to 4-8 students to ensure everyone gets enough attention. We learn in an acoustically treated environment where you can actually hear the subtle tonal differences of the sitar. My goal is to help you find your own sound, not just teach you to mimic mine. If you are curious about starting your own journey or have been looking for an environment where you can learn with patience and encouragement, I would love to hear from you.
