Behind the Scenes: Film & Stunt Direction
Step inside my process of designing action that hits hard and stays safe. From pre-viz blueprints to on-set execution, this is how I bring gritty, realistic fight scenes to life.
Collaborating with director Jithu Madhavan and DOP Sameer Thahir on the set of 'Aavesham'. Teamwork is key to creating seamless action that integrates perfectly with the film's narrative and visual style.
Rehearsing a fight move with Sriimurali sir for 'Bagheera'. We break down each action beat by beat, ensuring the actor is comfortable and the movement looks powerful and authentic on screen.
On the set of 'Bheema', we used harnesses and wirework to create dynamic, high-impact action. This clip shows our process of setting up a stunt, rehearsing with the performers, and ensuring everyone's safety.
With actor Fahadh Faasil at the Faktory. I've had the pleasure of directing the action for two of his films, including a massive 14-day climax sequence. Building a strong rapport with actors is essential for creating memorable stunts.
Directing a complex night sequence for 'Bagheera'. My role is to manage the stunt team and coordinate with the direction department to ensure the action is captured perfectly.
Explaining the blocking for a large group fight scene. Clear communication is critical when you have dozens of stunt performers moving at once. Every action is carefully choreographed for maximum impact and safety.
Framing a shot from inside a vehicle for 'Aavesham'. Action isn't just about open spaces; I design choreography that works in tight, confined environments to create a sense of raw intensity.
Holding the mic and camera rig, I'm right in the middle of the action. This hands-on approach allows me to guide the performers and camera operators in real-time to capture the energy of the scene.
Reviewing a take on a green screen set for 'Bagheera'. This is where we combine physical stunt work with the potential for visual effects, planning every detail with the VFX team.
A moment with the cast and crew of 'Bagheera'. It takes a dedicated team to pull off 55 days of intense action shooting, and I'm grateful for every person involved.
About Behind the Scenes: Film & Stunt Direction
Good action isn't just about throwing punches; it's about the prep work that happens long before the cameras roll. I use my HSR Layout studio to break down every sequence, rehearse with actors, and film pre-visualization (pre-viz) blueprints. By the time we hit the actual set, the stunt team, actors, and camera operators have already 'lived' the sequence. This approach keeps the set safe, saves production time, and ensures the intensity you see on screen is genuine.
My Approach to Action Design
When I come on board for a project, my goal is to create action that feels like a natural extension of the story. Whether it is a raw street fight or a complex chase sequence, I focus on movement that makes sense for the characters involved.
Pre-Visualization (Pre-Viz) Services
I don't believe in figuring out the action on the day of the shoot. That costs time and compromises safety. My process involves:
- Choreography Blueprints: We shoot a rough, edited version of the sequence at my HSR Layout facility to test the flow.
- Safety Assessments: We identify the rig points, mat requirements, and landing zones early.
- Camera Planning: I work closely with directors to ensure the choreography is designed to fit the lenses and angles they want to use.
Training Actors for Screen Combat
Great action performances require actors who are comfortable with their own bodies. I train actors—like I did for Aavesham—to build the physical vocabulary needed for film fighting. We work on:
- Selling the Hit: Teaching the mechanics of 'faking' a strike so it looks brutal on camera without risking injury.
- Camera Awareness: Knowing how to frame a movement so it reads clearly to the audience.
- Wirework & Harnesses: Getting actors used to the gear so their movements feel natural, not stiff, when they are flying.
On-Set Execution
Once we are on location, my job shifts to management and safety. I oversee the stunt team, rig checks, and performance timing to make sure we capture the energy of the sequence efficiently. From Bheema to Bagheera, my focus has always been on delivering a sequence that is as safe for the team as it is impactful for the audience.
Chaos Faktory
I'm the action director behind intense sequences in films like Aavesham and Bagheera. My approach is simple: I build action that is grounded, safe, and believable. Whether you need a full-scale brawl choreographed or help getting an actor camera-ready, I’m here to make it happen.
