Heritage Restoration & Revival Services
We believe historic spaces hold stories that shouldn't be erased. Our approach to restoration is about gently reviving architectural legacy while adapting it for the way we live today.
A closer look at the facade of the Bengal heritage project. The intricate arches, ornate columns, and detailed stonework are elements I am carefully preserving. The restoration aims to highlight the original craftsmanship and grandeur of the structure.
This long corridor with its repeating columns and traditional shutters tells a story of the past. My plan for this space is to restore the original flooring and architectural details while upgrading the lighting to make it both beautiful and functional.
About Heritage Restoration & Revival
When we take on a heritage project, our first step is an audit of what must stay. We identify which original architectural elements—like load-bearing arches or period-specific tiles—are structurally sound versus those that need reinforcement. This prevents the common mistake of gutting a building’s soul just to make it look renovated, when what it actually needs is thoughtful preservation.
A Conversation Between Past and Present
Restoring a heritage property is not about making it look new again. It is about honoring the narrative already written into the walls. Whether we are working on a traditional Kolkata home or a vintage estate, our goal is to retain the original character—the high ceilings, the unique column work, the courtyards—while upgrading the systems that make modern living possible.
Our Restoration Process
We treat every heritage project as a unique restoration journey. This typically involves:
- Structural Preservation: Before we bring in a single designer, we assess the structural integrity of the property. We work to save original features like lime-plastered walls and period flooring, reinforcing them rather than replacing them.
- Blending Utilities: The biggest challenge in heritage restoration is integrating modern needs like electrical, plumbing, and HVAC without scarring the architecture. We hide conduits within custom carpentry or specialized false ceiling designs that respect the original heights and aesthetics.
- Artisan Collaboration: We often work with traditional craftsmen who understand the nuances of materials like cane, teak, and local stone, ensuring that repairs are done with techniques that mirror the building's original era.
Why Sensitivity Matters
Too often, we see historic homes stripped of their charm to accommodate generic, modern office layouts or modular kitchens. We believe in doing the opposite. If the layout is 'awkward' by modern standards, we find a way to make that quirk a feature—perhaps turning a narrow corridor into a library or a dark corner into a quiet reading nook. Our philosophy, 'hum makaan nahin, ghar banate hain' (we don't just build houses, we build homes), applies here more than anywhere. A house has been here for decades; we are just the current custodians of its story.
