Art in the Landscape: Custom Garden Sculptures & Installations
I view landscape design as a narrative, and art is one of my primary tools for telling that story. By collaborating with artists and designing bespoke installations, I turn outdoor spaces into immersive experiences where nature and imagination resonate as one.
This biophilic snail art installation, titled 'Harmony in Motion,' is nestled within a landscaped court. The origami-like form and internal lighting create a captivating sense of wonder and tranquility, especially at night.
Viewed through a doorway, the snail installation becomes a piece of framed art. It is designed to create a sense of symbiosis with its surroundings, blurring the line between sculpture and garden.
A close-up of the snail's form, showing the sharp, geometric folds of the metal contrasting with the soft, organic shapes of the surrounding plants. This juxtaposition is central to the piece's impact.
The snail art installation glows from within, its concentric circles drawing the eye. This piece is a perfect example of how I use art to create a unique and memorable landscape experience.
A close-up of the lotus art installation. This piece pays homage to the lotus as a symbol of beauty and prosperity, with its delicate metal forms set against a rustic, textured stone wall.
This art installation stands tall amidst a lush green garden, creating a beautiful backdrop for a high-top seating area. It enhances the aesthetic appeal of the landscape and provides a unique conversation piece.
Where art and nature dance. This serene sunken basement court is enveloped in lush foliage, with a joyful dancing sculpture that seems to leap from the rustic chiselled stone backdrop.
A closer view of the dancing figure, captured in a moment of joyful movement. The warm copper of the sculpture contrasts beautifully with the cool tones of the stone and the vibrant greens of the plants.
This biophilic art piece on an atrium wall depicts the dawn sky. The custom planter symbolizes the earth, the curves suggest the wind, and a brass disc represents the rising sun, all set against a textured brick wall.
A wider view of the atrium wall art. The planter, with its trailing greenery, brings a refreshing oasis of life to the warm, earthy tones of the exposed brick.
About Art in the Landscape
When I introduce art into a landscape, I design for the specific environment, not just for aesthetics. Whether it is a backlit origami snail installation or a laser-cut lotus mounted on a textured brick wall, every piece is engineered to withstand the elements while becoming a focal point that shifts with the light and the seasons.
A garden is rarely finished by plants alone. To create a truly layered environment, I rely on the thoughtful placement of art, sculpture, and structural installations. This approach, which I call biophilic storytelling, allows us to break the monotony of hardscape surfaces and connect the architecture of a home to its surrounding greenery.
Materiality and Intent
My approach to landscape art is rooted in durability and harmony. I prefer materials like Corten steel, brass, and weather-treated metals that age gracefully, developing a patina that integrates the piece into the garden's life cycle. For instance, the origami snail I installed in a courtyard uses internal lighting to transform from a daytime geometric sculpture into a glowing, tranquil centerpiece at night.
The Art of the Wall
Vertical spaces offer unique opportunities for expression. At a recent project, we integrated a sunrise-inspired planter installation onto an exposed brick wall, using brass discs and curved metal to suggest wind and movement. This does not just decorate the wall, it frames the atrium, drawing the eye upwards and making the brickwork feel alive.
Why Collaborate?
I believe art in the landscape should not feel like an afterthought. It must be woven into the site plan. When we start a project, we look at the voids, the empty corners, the blank walls, and the transition areas, and identify where an installation can change how you experience the space. Whether you are looking for a statement fountain, a playful sculpture for a family garden, or a subtle textural element, my goal is to create a feature that feels as though it grew from the site itself.
