Art and Community: Sketching Together in Bengaluru
Art is better when shared. I love getting out with sketch groups, meeting fellow artists, and capturing the vibe of our city together.
Spend a day with me. This video follows me from a sketch meetup with Urban Sketchers Bengaluru at Vidhana Soudha to a more relaxed painting session with friends in Cubbon Park. It's all about art and community.
A great day sketching with the USK Bengaluru group at the Museum of Art & Photography (MAP). We explored the galleries for inspiration and then shared our sketches.
Sketching time with USK Hyderabad. I had a wonderful time meeting the local crew at a beautiful cafe and was so inspired by the energy of the city's art scene.
I had the privilege of joining the USK Nagpur sketch walk at Mahdi Bagh. The community was so welcoming, and it was an amazing experience to sketch in such a historic and culturally rich place.
The Urban Sketchers Nagpur group shot. A talented and friendly bunch of artists. It's always inspiring to see how everyone interprets the same location in their own unique style.
Here I am, sketching with the USK Nagpur group. I found a spot on the steps to capture the scene. Urban sketching is a great way to really observe and connect with a new place.
A closer look at my process during the Nagpur sketch walk. I'm adding watercolor to my line sketch, bringing the architecture and surroundings to life with color.
Another angle of me working on my sketch in Nagpur. These community sketch walks are a fantastic way to practice and learn from others in a supportive environment.
The USK Nagpur group proudly holding up their sketchbooks. It was a wonderful and productive day of art.
A candid moment of concentration during the sketch walk. These events are a great mix of social fun and focused creative time.
About Art & Community
Urban sketching is not about getting every perspective perfect. When I join a sketch walk, the real magic happens in the quiet conversations we share while our ink dries and the inspiration that comes from seeing five different people interpret the exact same tree or cafe corner in their own unique style.
For me, the sketchbook is a passport to connection. I have spent countless weekends with the Urban Sketchers (USK) community in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Nagpur, and every session reinforces that art is a shared language.
Why join a sketch walk?
- Low Pressure, High Joy: You do not need to be a professional. We meet at spots like Cubbon Park or local cafes, grab a coffee or sit on the grass, and just draw. It is about the process, not the product.
- Finding Your Tribe: Sketching can be a solitary practice, but doing it in a group is entirely different. You learn new techniques, discover different pens, and most importantly, you make friends who share your passion for the small, quiet details of city life.
- Learning by Doing: Whether it is sketching the architecture at Vidhana Soudha or capturing a candid moment at a festival, you learn more in two hours of plein air sketching than in ten hours of online tutorials. We observe the light, the movement, and the people, and we learn to translate that rhythm onto paper.
What to expect
Most of our meetups are casual. We gather, we find a spot, we draw for an hour or so, and then we lay out our sketchbooks. This is my favorite part—the sharing circle. Seeing everyone’s work, from messy first sketches to detailed ink drawings, is incredibly grounding. If you have been looking for an excuse to step out, grab your sketchbook, and meet some like-minded creatives, this is your sign.
Basit
I am Basit. Art started as a solo escape for me, but it became so much more when I found my tribe. These sketches are moments of connection—whether we are at a cafe or a park, it is all about the shared joy of making marks on paper.
