This is the journey of three shawls sent by a client from Chicago. I transformed them into a custom, paneled (kali walo) overcoat saya, complete with full inner fusing for warmth. It’s a joy to create pieces that are both traditional and practical.
A beautiful example of a single shawl transformed into a custom-fit Koti. We carefully placed the original red and gold embroidery along the borders, cuffs, and pockets to create a truly unique and personal garment for a happy client.
Getting the perfect fit for your custom Koti is simple, even from a distance. In this video, I demonstrate how to take the correct length measurement to ensure your upcycled waistcoat fits you exactly as it should.
It was a pleasure creating this custom shawl Koti for a delighted client in the US. I take pride in serving our community across the globe, ensuring everyone receives a perfectly tailored garment they can cherish.

About Featured
Before I cut a single piece, I align your shawl’s existing embroidery pattern to the garment’s structure. Whether it is a sleeveless koti or a full-sleeve overcoat, I apply full inner fusing to ensure the fabric holds its shape and provides the warmth and durability you expect from professional tailoring.
I treat your shawls as more than just fabric. They are often hadiya (gifts) with stories, and I ensure that sentiment carries over into your new attire. My process covers three distinct types of transformations:
- Sleeveless Koti: Ideal for a single shawl. I add structured fusing to the front and pocket lips to ensure it sits perfectly over your kurta.
- Comfortable Jacket: Using two shawls, I create an 'over-saya' cut. This features deeper armholes and a looser chest allowance to prevent bunching, making it practical for daily wear.
- Kali Overcoat: For three shawls, I use a paneled 'Kali' technique. This design is built for colder climates, with heavy thermal fusing and lining to act as a proper winter garment.
My team at Bhendi Bazaar handles the construction with precision, from the hand-hemmed edges to the strategic placement of original embroidery on collars and plackets.
Distance is not a barrier to this service. I work with clients across the globe, from the US to the UK. Through simple, step-by-step video guides, I will help you take your measurements—or measure a garment you already own—to ensure the final fit is 99% accurate.
