The Artist's Journey: From Concept to Creation
Every wall installation begins with a quiet sketch and a single, deliberate line. Step inside my studio to see how discarded paper turns into tactile, sculptural art that breathes.
Welcome to my world. This video tells my story, from my studies in Belgium to founding my studio in Mumbai, where I transform discarded paper into timeless beauty. For me, sustainability is the heart of my practice.
Who am I as an artist? I breathe to create. I create to be free. This video is a meditation on my philosophy, where I translate emotion into form and curate stories, not just artworks.
From a thought to a sketch, this is how an artwork is born. The process always starts with a quiet moment of reflection and putting pencil to paper.
Every story starts with a line. This is where "Enchanted Abyss" was born, on paper, with quiet intention.
From a test sample to the final, large-scale piece. This video shows the moment we moved beyond the sample and began building the heart of the "Enchanted Abyss" artwork.
Before starting any final piece, I create a small sample to experiment with textures and techniques. It's my way of understanding how an idea will come to life, layer by layer.
Color brings energy, depth, and emotion. This video shows the process of painting "Enchanted Abyss," bringing the sculpture to life.
The beginning of a new piece: mixing texture paste, creating curves, and the first touch of creation.
A closer look at the layers, the depth, the dimension. Texture isn’t just seen, it’s felt. Here, the layers begin to breathe.
A moment with the raw, intricate, and beautifully intentional texture of the "Whispering Waves" sculpture before it's painted.
About The Artist's Journey: From Concept to Creation
Most people see the final sculpture, but the core of my work happens long before the gold leaf touches the surface. I don't use canvas. Every piece here starts with a dense base of upcycled paper pulp I prepare by hand, which I then sculpt into 3D forms while the mixture is still malleable. It requires a specific, slow drying process to ensure the ridges hold their shape, which is why I often work on multiple layers of texture over several days before any paint touches the piece.
The journey of an artwork is not linear; it is a conversation between materials and my own intuition. My process is deeply tied to sustainability, which is why I began working with upcycled paper. It offers a porosity and depth that traditional paint on flat canvas simply cannot replicate.
The Anatomy of a Piece
- The Concept: It starts with a feeling—or what I call a 'Navarasa'—which I map out in quick, rough sketches on my tablet or paper.
- The Sculpting: This is the tactile phase. I mix the paper pulp, resin, and binders, then apply it to the backing. I use my hands and palette knives to build peaks and valleys. This is where the 'flow' happens, and where the piece starts to develop its own rhythm.
- The Curing: A large-scale 3D artwork needs time to breathe. Rushing this stage leads to cracks, so I monitor the moisture levels in the studio constantly.
- The Finish: This is the final layer where I introduce Duco paints, gold leaf, or even rough diamond inserts. This is when the piece changes from raw matter into a finished, light-catching sculpture.
Whether you are looking at a small sculptural collectible or a 7-foot statement installation, the process remains the same. I want my art to be something you can touch and feel, not just something you hang on a wall to fill space. If you have a specific wall or a corner in your home that needs a narrative, that is exactly where my journey and yours can align.
